Note that Othneil Gorton was married to two different women named Mercy (or Marcy) Burlingame. The first marriage, circa 1692, was to the daughter of Roger and Mary Burlingame. The second, circa 1716, was to the daughter of Roger and Mary's son John and Mary Knowles (Lippitt) Burlingame. His second wife was thus a niece of his first wife.3,4
He was, among other things, an innkeeper in Warwick, Rhode Island, and served as a captain in the Warwick militia. He also served many times in both houses of the legislature.2
His will was dated 5 June 1733 and proved 29 June 1733. The executrix was his widow Mercy. In his will he left: to his son Israel, the land at Mashantatack where Israel was then living; to his son John, the west end of the land at Mashantatack where John was then living; to both Israel and John equally, the old orchard and the rest of the land at Mashantatack; to his son Othneil Jr., when he came of age, his house, all his land in Scituate, Warwick, and elsewhere, and a feather bed (but his widow was to have them until then, as well as use of the kitchen and bedroom while a widow); to his daughter Frances, 5s if she married Jeremiah Pierce, which was against his will, and £40 otherwise.2,5
