In 1762 Israel Burlingame and his wife Eunice settled on a 157-acre farm in lot 18 in Dutchess Co., New York, on the west side of Skidmore Road, 1/2 mile north of Barmore Road, in the present town of LaGrange. The land was originally settled in 1750 by Nicholas Vincent. The following entries appear in the rent book:
Now Israel Burlingham bought this farm and bond of £10/5 interest added equals £11/6 and two years back rent, 30 bushels at 6/ is £9. Total is £20/6. Jonathan Ricketson is bound with him, which clears this farm to 1762.
This farm lies south of Marston's lot.
1763 Nov. 3rd- Sd I. Burlingham gave bond for back rents to May 1763 £5/19/9.
1771 he gave bond £44/1, ten years interest £1/1, 8 years back rents 120 bushels at 7/ = £42 - total £87/2. He sold the farm to Henry Gidley who gave bond for the same & gave him a new lease, his life, his wife & son just as his way other wise he would not take it. Wch clears it to 1772.6
They lived in Durchess Co. until about 1775, when they moved to Weathersfield, Vermont.5
He apparently had a lot of money problems, as illustrated by the following court records from Dutchess Co., New York:
(1) He borrowed £11/16 from Nicholas DeLavergne on 11 February 1762. DeLavergne wasn't repaid and eventually had to sue, winning a judgment in January 1772.
(2) He borrowed £12/14 from Jonathan Ricketson, who died of smallpox before the debt was repaid. In May 1772 Ricketson's heirs filed suit for repayment.
(3) He borrowed £7 from Martin Overocker on 1 February 1769, and "confessed judgment for £5/3/9 damages with costs of suit" on 30 September 1771.
(4) He borrowed £15 from Peter Deyoe on 2 March 1769, and Deyoe was granted a judgment for £9/15/3 on 30 September 1771.
(5) He borrowed £6/15/2 from Samuel Mabbet on 8 June 1770, and Mabbet was granted a judgment on 13 July 1773.
(6) He borrowed £15 from Jacob Everson on 1 March 1772, and Everson eventually was granted a judgment of £9/9/9 and 3 farthings.7
He worked as a cooper from 1765 to 1766, and paid bills at Schenk's store by making flour casks.5
On 22 December 1772, in Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., New York, he recorded an ear mark (i.e., cattle brand). This mark was transferred to Hezekiah Mills on 28 March 1775.5
On 15 August 1775 he was listed as a lieutenant in the Upper Regt., Cumberland Co., Vermont.3,5 On 13 October 1777 he was employed by Capt. Abel Marsh in carrying flour from the Connecticut River to the Battenkill, for use by the Northern Army. He was credited with ten days service, plus two horses at 16s/day, covering 120 miles, and received a total of £8.3,5
He was a delegate from Weathersfield at a meeting of the committees of safety in Westminister, Vermont, from 11 June 1776 to 21 June 1776.3 He was chosen Town Clerk in Weathersfield in 1777.3 From 1778 to 1780 he was a selectman in Weathersfield, and also served as a representative.5
In his father's will, dated 8 October 1784 and proved 7 September 1790, he was left one shilling.1
He is listed in the census of 1790 in Weathersfield, Windsor Co., Vermont, as Israel Burmingham, with one male over 16, three males under 16, and four females.5
He and his wife Eunice had the following known children, according to the Nelson Burlingame Manuscript: Anna (b 10 August 1762, d 1 February 1825), John (b 28 May 1764, d 18 February 1813), Dorcas (b 12 May 1766, d 20 July 1845), Joshua (b 20 October 1768, d 22 December 1852), Richetson "Rix" (b 3 June 1771, d 11 August 1840), Abducah, Ira (b 5 November 1778, d 30 November 1846), Sabina (b 29 December 1780, d 5 February 1856), Selah (b 1782, d 9 March 1820), Israel (b 13 November 1787, d 13 April 1854).
