Daniel Coffin Lewis1,2

b. 2 September 1841, d. 17 March 1924
Daniel Coffin Lewis was born on 2 September 1841 in Kennebec Co., Maine.2 He married Bernice Pamelia Burlingham, daughter of Nathan Decatur Burlingham and Laura Sophia Kidder, on 24 December 1886 in El Dorado Co., California.1 He died on 17 March 1924 at his home in Calwa Park, Fresno Co., California, at age 82.3,4 He was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Fresno, Fresno Co., California.5
When the Civil War began in 1861 he was living in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, working as a pattern maker6, and enlisted there on 13 June as a private in Co. E of the 11th Massachusetts Infantry. Barely a month later, on 21 July, he was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder and taken prisoner at the First Battle of Bull Run, just north of Manassas, Virginia. He was released in February 1862. Whether he rejoined his regiment or not is unknown. If so, he would have participated in the Siege of Yorktown from April to May 1862, the Battle of Williamsburg on 5 May, the Battle of Fair Oaks on 25 June, and the Second Battle of Bull Run on 29 August. He was eventually discharged for disability, on 31 October 1862 in Washington, D.C., according to one source, and on 13 November 1862 in Falmouth, Virginia, according to another.6,7
He and his wife Bernice lived for a time in Jalisco, Mexico, possibly from December 1898 until at least 19072,8, where he had a mining business.2 In 1910 Bernice and their children Bert and Percy were living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California. Daniel is not listed with them in the census, and was probably still in Mexico.9
He lived for about a year and a half at the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle, Los Angeles Co., California, being admitted on 3 October 1916. At the time he was suffering from chronic indigestion, arteriosclerosis, and a swollen prostate and heart. He left on his own recognizance on 10 February 1918.7
He and Bernice are listed together in the 1920 census in Fresno, Fresno Co., California. Bernice's niece Jessie (daughter of her sister Augusta) and her husband Clarence Bliss were then living with them.10
He was working as a helper in a warehouse in 1920.10
