Ida Saxton was born on 8 June 1847 in Canton, Ohio.1 She married President William McKinley, son of William McKinley and Nancy Campbell Allison, on 25 January 1871 at 1st Presby Church, Canton, Ohio.1 Ida Saxton died on 26 May 1907 in Canton, Ohio, at age 59.1 She was buried in Canton, Ohio.1
Fragile and petite, she was a cashier in her father's bank when she met McKinley, thus making her the first career woman to become First Lady. Because she was nearly an invalid, Mrs. Garret A. Hobart, wife of the vice- president, performed many of the duties in the White House as 'Second Lady'.1 She became the mother of Katherine (Katie) McKinley on 25 December 1871.1 Ida Saxton became the mother of Ida McKinley between 1 April 1872 and 1873.1 Ida's daughter Ida McKinley died on 22 August 1873 in Canton, Ohio.1 Ida's daughter Katherine (Katie) McKinley died on 25 June 1876 in Canton, Ohio.1 Ida Saxton became a widow with the death of her husband, President William McKinley on 14 September 1901 in Buffalo, New York, at age 58.1
