He enlisted as a Private on 06 August 1862 in Tyre, NY at the age of 26 and was dispatched to Company F, 126th Infantry Regiment New York on 22 August 1862. He was a POW at Harper's Ferry on 15 September 1862 and paroled on 16 September 1862 with his regiement. An account of this Harper's Ferry incident can be found in the book 'Harper's Ferry Cowards.'
