MONTEZUMA - Mark W. Townsend, 72, of Montezuma passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023, after a short, hard-fought battle with cancer.
At the age of 18, Mark answered the call from his country to serve in the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he worked alongside his family at MC Townsend & Sons before taking a job in the foundry at Gould's Pumps in Seneca Falls, where he worked for 40 years. Later in life, he could always be found either in his greenhouse surrounded by plants, in his garden digging in the dirt or at the golf course, enjoying a round with his friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mark and Delores, as well as his brother, Tommy. He is survived by his siblings: Debbie (Pat), Randy (Dawn), Joey and his children: Mark, Stacey, Lannon (Susan), and Holley; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be invited to a Celebration of Life in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Montezuma Fire Department or Cayuga Ambulance Service.

- [S261] The Citizen, Auburn, NY, MONTEZUMA - Tommy Townsend born Aug. 27, 1952 was called to rest on Oct. 23, 2016 with his much beloved parents, Mark and Delores (Smith) Townsend. Tommy was in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Tommy shared the last happy days of his 46 years with his soulmate and wife, Joanne. Together they happily added four beautiful daughters to their family. The joy of his life, Honorable Heather (Bruce) Tanner, Dr. Heidi (Dr. Kenneth) Townsend-Efird, Tommie-Jo Dechick, and Hilary (Terry Flanigan) Townsend. His wonderful daughters provided Tommy with the greatest gift of his life, eight grandchildren that he loved more than life itself. Bruce "Chubbers" Tanner III - an easy going young man always willing to help his grandparents any way he could, Tayler Tanner "the apple of his eye," - he loved lunches with her and she could always make him laugh, Nathan Dechick - Tommy's best buddy in the whole world, Parker Efird - could be president of United States, if that's what he wants to do, Cooper Dechick - best tough guy and WWE wrestler, Logan Efird - true Townsend in every form, Hudson Efird - little guy, so easy going, and Baby Brice Flanigan - Hilary's little miracle.
Tommy completed high school and went to work with his father's respected business, M.C. Townsend & Sons Construction Company. It brought Tommy pleasure and joy to be working beside his father. On Nov. 30, 1980, Tommy became owner of the company and always maintained the highest standards of quality and workmanship, changing the name to M.C. Townsend Construction.
Even though Tommy never had a son, he chose to become a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed all meetings with the boys, building bird houses, going cross country skiing, and just sharing his time. Tommy always maintained honesty and kindness with everyone that he met. Tommy was by far the most generous gentleman to all. He always believed it was a privilege to give to anyone in need and his family never lacked for anything.
Tommy's to do list always included decorating his home for the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas. He felt children received joy from this.
Tommy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and never asked for anything. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, sitting in the gazebo with his wife, maintaining his yard, flowers, and birds. He loved visiting zoos and simply being with his family. His only request in life was that his family was happy and healthy
Tommy is survived by three brothers, Mark, Randy (Dawn), and Joe and one sister, Debbie (Pat) Thomas. He has one sister-in-law, Kathy (Thomas) Hoey, and many nieces and nephews.
For all that knew Tommy, he was a private family man. Per his request, there will be no public services. His family appreciates your understanding and respect of his wishes.
Tommy's physical presence may have left us, but he will always be here through his family. His children display his qualities of hard work, honesty, respect, and love for family. This will be seen with the continuation of his business M.C. Townsend Construction. We are proud to announce that his daughter, Heather Tanner will be taking over the family business.
Tommy's request was that there will be no donations but to spend time with your precious families.
