Main Events

BiographyHe became a vicar after retiring from being a teacher. He attended Chester Diocese Training College and gained a Techers Certificate in 1905. Crockford's gives the following " d and p 1953 Wor; Church of All Saints w St. Helen, Worc 1953-56; Vicar of Swinbrook w Widford, Dio Ox from 1956; Swinbrook Vicarage, Burford, Oxon. "

Thank you for your letter together with the notes from Mr John Snelson concerning my predecessor at Swinbrook in the Diocese of Oxford, namely the Reverend Jack Mason Pierce, whom I succeeded in 1967.

I recall very clearly both Mr Mason Pierce and his charming wife, Helen, for they made my wife and me most welcome when we called on them, by appointment, shortly before their retirement. He had served the Benefice for about eleven years following his Ordination for which he had prepared at, I think, the Worcester Training College for Older Men. (I have never heard of the Cheshire Training College, but have always known that Jack was a certificated teacher).

During our conversations he gave me a good deal of advice and background information relating to the parish and to his parishioners. This was a considerable boon and enabled me to avoid a number of mistakes or misjudgements.

In due course, Jack Mason-Pierce (the usual manner in which he described himself) removed, with his wife Helen and their two (I think) children to the very ancient Dorset town of Sherborne, where some generous benefactor unknown had undertaken to provide the family with housing, either in Sherborne itself or at any rate within the vicinity.

Most unfortunately I never learned their precise address and correspondence between us was not continued. I have always felt a certain guilt in having never made a point of finding out their address in order to say how his former parish was going. I really do regret this - although I have never heard from the Mason-Pierces anyway. Such a breakdown in communication was most unfortunate - particularly since it ought to have been quite a simple operation by consulting the Sherborne Register. A Black mark to T.Hine.

One particular feature of John's ministry at Swinbrook and Widford ( to which, in my time Asthall was very appropriately added) was that he was his own organist - an eccentricity which I, as an enthusiastic organist myself continued throughout my 27 years as vicar 1967 - 1994, when I retired to North Dorest, just 8 miles from Sherborne, whither the Mason-Pierces themselves had lived after Swinbrook. But I never did discover where they had lived exactly, nor where they had moved, if they had moved. So much the pity.

Should any further reflections occur to me I will write again, in case Mr. Snelson finds them at all useful.

Yours sincerely,

J.T.M.Hine
Hon. Canon of Christchurch.
