Ed was a protégé of Boston Brahmin Elliot Richardson dating to both mens' time in Massachusetts state government.

After Nixon's election, and despite Ed being a (fairly) liberal Democrat, Richardson warmly recommended him at OMB and later as commissioner of rehabilitation. (Bonus: Ed's family and mine got to watch the 1969 inaugural parade from a balcony above Pennsylvania Avenue in the Old Executive Office Building. My big memory was that the Up With People float was really dreadful, even to a 9-year-old.)4
