Austin N. Kimmis1

b. 18 August 1813, d. 13 June 1897
FatherSamuel Kimmis2
Austin N. Kimmis was born on 18 August 1813 (based on his age at death of 83 years, 9 months, 26 days, although the Charles A. Towne microfilm collection says 21 August 1812) in Shushan, Washington Co., New York.2,1 He married first Rebecca Town, daughter of Alfred Town and Polly Bartlett, on 26 July (probably in 1834 or 1835, if the birth date of their first child is correct), in Walworth, Wayne Co., New York.1 He married second Rhoda M. Coldren, daughter of Elijah Coldren and Elizabeth Hendershot, sometime between 30 June 1848, the death date of his first wife Rebecca, and 24 October 1850, when he and Rhoda were enumerated together in the census.1,3 He died on 13 June 1897 in Novi, Oakland Co., Michigan, at age 83.2
Austin N. Kimmis and his second wife Rhoda are listed in the census of 1850 in Lyon Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, not far from his first wife's father Alfred Town, with his children Nelson and Sarah from his first marriage. Also listed in the same household are Caroline Grisel (age 12), Elijah Coldron (age 23), and James Scotney (age 27).3 In 1860 they are listed in Novi, Oakland Co., Michigan, again with Nelson and Sarah, plus their children Emma and Effie. Listed with them is Samuel Kimmis (age 81), probably Austin's father, and Chancy Jordan (age 23).4 They were still in Novi in 1870 and 1880. In 1870 their children Emma, Effie, and Austin Jr. were with them, along with Ann Shaddack (age 36, a seamstress). Also living with them was Austin N. Kimmis 2d (age 23, born in Vermont), possibly a nephew. Sarah D. Kimmis (age 18, born in Michigan), possibly a niece, was living next door as a housekeeper in the home of John and Fannie Kilworth. By 1880 Austin Jr. was the only child still living with them, but their household also included boarders Charles Parkes (age 18) and Frank Doithy (age 21), and servant Aggie Doithy.5,6

Children of Austin N. Kimmis and Rebecca Town

Except for Sarah Rebecca, the children listed here for Austin and Rebecca, and their birth and death dates, are from the New Hudson Cemetery records. The Charles A. Town microfilm collection has slightly different information. It lists the following children for them: Nelson (b 6 June 1839, d 11 April 1863), Mary E. (b 14 September 1840, d 11 August 1841), an infant son (b 1841, d 8 October 1841), Samuel Otis (b 8 December 1846, d 11 December 1847), Sarah Rebecca (b 29 April 1848).7,1

He served in the Revolution as a private in Capt. Stone's company, Col. Latimer's regiment, and was at the Battle of Saratoga from 23 August 1777 to 9 November 1777.3 Later, from 16 July 1780 to 25 December 1780, he served as a private in Capt. Rice's company, Lt. Col. Sherman's 8th Connecticut Reg., Continental Line.3
He moved at one point to Norwich, Chenango Co., New York.3 He then moved to Spafford, Onondaga Co., New York, soon after 1806, becoming one of the early settlers there.6
His will was dated 12 December 1818 in Spafford, and proved 4 February 1819. His wife Judith and son Clark were named executors. He left $100 each to his sons Alfred, Orren, Clark, and Simon (Lyman?), and $50 each to his daughters Prudence, Sophia, Matilda, and Sylva. Children of Isaac Town and Judith Hutchins

In addition to the children listed below, the Charles A. Towne microfilm collection includes another child for Isaac and his second wife Judith, possibly named Alphia (the copy from the microfilm is difficult to read), but with the same death date and same wife as their better documented son Orrin. It seems probable that the information about Alphia is incorrect.3
