In California Herman worked for the mining companies, and also did some gold panning on his own. By 1854 Eunice wanted to return to Iowa, but they were still in California in the summer of 1855. Herman's health wasn't good, and when they did return home they went by boat to Panama, then overland across the isthmus, then by boat to New York, and by train to Minnesota.
