He served in the French and Indian Wars.3 He also served in the Revolutionary War, and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1776. He was at Fort Edward, Ticonderoga, White Plains, and New London.3 He and Dorcas had two known children, Martin (b 5 May 1753, d 11 June 1811) and Dorcas.4

He came to America from England with his parents.5 According to family tradition, when emigrating from England to America in 1635, a woman and her child paid only a single fare if the child were still nursing. He was old enough to wean, but his mother Rachel continued to nurse him to avoid paying a double fare.6

He lived in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut. He was one of the first settlers on the east side of the Great River, then known as "Windsor Farmes," probably in 1699 or 1700.2 After 1743 he lived in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, with his son, Rev. Isaac Stiles.2
