He moved about 1840 to Dane Co., Wisconsin, near Madison, where he bought land and farmed.2 Sometime between 1855 and 1859 (based on the birth places of his children) he moved his family to Northwood, Worth Co., Iowa, where they were among the first settlers. Their farm was on the Iowa/Minnesota border, and today is the State Line Cemetery in Myrtle, Minnesota.2 After his wife Deborah died, he reportedly traveled back to Wisconsin and returned with elm saplings that she had loved, and planted them on her grave.3
Shortly after their marriage, he and his second wife Mary moved their family to Granby, Newton Co., Missouri.2 He apparently had wanderlust, and followed his children as they moved, while his wife Mary stayed in Granby. In 1879 he was living in Todd Co., Minnesota, along with his children James, Mary Ann, and Frances.2

At the time of her marriage to Asa Phelps, she was living in Edwards, St. Lawrence Co., New York.1,4 After their marriage, she and Asa lived in Emmett Twp., Calhoun Co., Michigan.1,2,5 They are listed there in the census of 1850 with the surname "Phillips." Also listed are Silas, Charles, and Julia (from Asa's first marriage to Maria Stiles), and Asa, Nancy C., Rachel L., and Lindon R. "Phillips" (presumably Asa and Rachel's children).6 They are also listed in Emmet Twp. in 1870, with their children Rachel and Lyndon.7
On 8 April 1878 she filed a declaration in support of her application for a widow's pension based on her husband Asa's military service during the War of 1812. She was admitted to the pension rolls on 21 December 1878, and received $8.00/month.2

He moved to Michigan, presumably with his parents, in 1834.1 He attended Albion Seminary for several terms.1 He worked as a carpenter and joiner. While employed by Dubois Hutchinson, he helped construct many early buildings and bridges in Battle Creek, Michigan, and vicinity. While employed by John Champion and Warren B. Shepard, he helped make the first lot of brick in the Battle Creek area.1 In 1854 he and his wife Emily moved to Minnesota where he had obtained 120 acres of land from the government.1 He was living in Dover, Olmstead Co., Minnesota, in 1891.1 He and Emily had two sons and two daughters.1
