He lived in St. Lawrence Co., New York, until 1834.1 He then moved to Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan, with his parents. They traveled by wagon as part of a family party, taking four weeks via Canada.3,4,1,5,6 He lived in Emmett Twp., Calhoun Co., Michigan, from 1836 to 1852.3,4,1 He is listed in his father Asa's household in Emmett Twp. in the 1850 census. His occupation is given as farmer.7 He was educated at Spring Arbor College, and later at Albion Seminary.1
He moved to California in 1852, traveling there from Michigan with horses and mules, taking 74 days between the Missouri River and California.1 He stayed a year and a half, then returned to Emmett Twp. via the water route.1 He moved to a 55-acre farm in Section 22 of Emmett Twp. in Sep 1866.1 In 1870 his real estate was valued at $3300, and his personal estate at $370.8
He was a teacher in the winter, and farmer in the summer, and was also School Inspector for a number of years. The last year he taught was 1880.1,8 He was a Republican, serving as Township Supervisor for three years and Clerk for 13 years.1

Carter's New York Militia Regiment, and was discharged in August 1814.3 He is listed in the census of 1870 in Ward 1 of Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan.
