He lived in the Poynton House on Brown Street in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2 He served as clerk of courts in Salem.2 He was also a member of the Philosophical Library Company in Salem, which was founded in 1781.2 His will was dated 4 December 1806 and proved 24 March 1808. His sister Bridget was the executrix.2 He and Elizabeth had two known children, Thomas Poynton (b 20 December 1798, d 16 March 1852) and Nathaniel (b 24 May 1800, d 20 June 1800).2,3

He joined the church in Reading, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, on 1 September 1677.1 On 30 December 1687 he bought 20 acres of land adjoining his father's property from Ann Collins and her son Henry.1 On 28 April 1691 he received a portion of the family homestead from his father.1
On 11 May 1691 he was appointed guardian of Jonathan Stimpson.1
On 16 January 1711 the people of Lyn Farms met at his house to form a precinct and order a meeting house. He was one of a three-man committee chosen to set the precinct boundaries.1
