On 21 June 1850 James Lewis Williamson purchased land in the Timber Ridge area, originally owned by Matthew Carney, from his brother-in-law Joseph B. Layne and Paulina E. Lane for $50.1 He bought a tract adjoining this one from Achilles H. Layne on 4 May 1860.1 On 31 August 1868 his father transferred all of his possessions to him for $1.00, and due to his "natural love and affection," the property to be held in a trust. James was to care for his mother, and receive the property at her death.1 He and his wife Hester transferred 102 1/2 acres on Timber Ridge to their son Woodville for $1.00.1
His will was dated 1876 in Botetourt Co., Virginia, and proved on 12 February 1877. His sons Woodville and Isaac were named executors. He left 1/3 of his property to his wife Hester Ann for the remainder of her life. After her death it was to be divided equally among his surviving children. The rest of his estate was to be divided equally between his six children, except that his sons Woodville, Isaac, and Charles were to have deducted from their share the value of property that he had already given them. His property in Bedford Co. was to be sold.2
He and Hester had the following known children: Woodville (b 25 August 1847, d 22 April 1915), James Lewis, Charles Leonard Thomas (b 7 March 1855, d 11 March 1934), Mary Elizabeth (b 1858, d 1940), Isaac Carper (b 9 April 1859), and Silas Lee (b 31 August 1861, d 1 January 1929).3
