During the Revolutionary War Barzillai Stickney enlisted in Capt. Oliver's Co., 3rd. Reg., from Holden, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, and served 34 months 21 days.2
He and his first wife Hannah moved to Cornwall, Addison Co., Vermont, in 1784, where they settled on a farm purchased from Gamaliel Painter.2 He was chosen Constable of Cornwall when the town was organized that same year, and also served as Treasurer.2 About 1789 he and his second wife Olive moved to Weybridge, Addison Co., Vermont.2 He also chosen Constable there, when that town was organized in 1789.2

His obituary says that although he was "early an orphan and penniless boy," he became a doctor through "labor and school-teaching." The "early an orphan" must refer to his mother's death when he was 17, since he was 46 when his father died. He studied with Dr. Goodhue of Charlestown, Cheshire Co. (now Sullivan Co.), New Hampshire.2 In 1802 he moved to Jay, Essex Co., New York, where he began his medical practice.2
He was one of the original purchasers of the Arnold Ore Bed, which he learned of from an old Indian named Sabeal while treating him for an illness. He became partners with Arnold and Southmayd, and became quite wealthy.2
