About 1754, at age 21, Joseph Stickney served with his brother Jedediah as a private in Col. Winslow's expedition to Nova Scotia. They are both listed in Col. Winslow's Journal on 28 May 1755 as members of Maj. Preble's Co. on the Sea Flower, Samuel Harris captain. The Stickney genealogy, citing the Massachusetts Archives, also says he was in the First Foot Co. of Boxford in 1737, which is clearly wrong, and is likely a typo for 1757.2
He was a tailor.2
On 10 July 1767 he bought five acres of land in Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts, from Nathan Wood for £11.3 On 1 January 1774 he sold woodland in Boxford to John Dresser.4 Around that same year he moved to New Ipswich, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire, where he bought a farm.2
He and his wife Anna sold the land left to him by his father, and his buildings, to his brother Jedediah for £135 13s 4d on 18 February 1777 (or 1771; Joseph's entry in the Stickney genealogy has the year as 1777, while Jedediah's entry has the year as 1771). Jedediah was also to pay their mother the legacy that Joseph was charged with paying in their father's will.5

He served with his brother Joseph as a private from Boxford in Col. Winslow's expedition to Nova Scotia during the French and Indian War. They are both listed in Winslow's Journal on 28 May 1755 as members of Maj. Preble's company on the Sea Flower, Samuel Harris captain.2 He also served in the First Foot Company of Boxford in 1757.2
On 13 April 1767 he purchased 24 acres of upland meadow and orchard, including buildings, from Jabez Town for £300.4 On 12 April 1769 he bought, from his brother Samuel and his wife Rebecca for £340, the real estate that had been left to Samuel by their father.5 On 5 April 1771 he and his wife Peggy sold 44 acres of upland, meadow, and orchard in Boxford, with buildings, to Paul Pritchard for £240.6 On 18 February 1777 (or 1771; Joseph's entry in the Stickney genealogy has the year as 1777, while Jedediah's entry has the year as 1771) he bought, from his brother Joseph and wife Anna, the land and buildings left to Joseph by their father for £135, 13s., 4d. Jedediah also agreed to pay their mother the legacy that Joseph was charged with paying in their father's will.7
On 19 April 1775 he responded to the alarm at Lexington, marching from Boxford as an ensign in Capt. Jacob Gould's company, Col. Samuel Johnson's regiment, and was paid for four days service.2 Later during the Revolution, from 27 June 1780 to 10 October 1780, he served as a second lieutenant in Capt. Jonathan Ayer's company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment, to reinforce the Continental Army.2
His will was dated 9 May 1805 and proved 1 May 1809. He left his wife Sarah the "use and improvement of part of the house and yard, cattle, &c." His son Ancil, who was named executor, was left his house, barn, and other buildings, all his land in Boxford, all his livestock and farm tools, and his loom (except his wife could also use the loom). Ancil was to pay $20 a year to his (Jedediah's) mother, as her dower from the estate. His sons Nathan and Asa, and daughters Peggy and Hannah, each received $60 to be paid one year after his death. He also left legacies to his grandchildren Jonas, Aaron, Lydia, Betty, and Apphia, children of his deceased daughter Apphia Warren.8

He served during the Revolutionary War, from 2 July 1778 to 17 December 1788, and from July 1779 to 9 October 1779, in Capt. Dodge's Co. at Winter Hill. On 9 October 1779 he was detached to Capt. Addison Richardson's Co., Col. Jacob Gerrish's Reg., to reinforce Washington's Army. Records show he also served from 18 October 1779 to 22 November 1779, and received £16. He again enlisted on 21 August 1781 in Capt. James Malloon's Co., Col. Putnam's Reg., to reinforce the Continental Army, and was discharged on 4 December 1781. He received a pension for his service in October 1832.2
On 21 November 1788 he bought 32 1/2 acres of woodland bordering his father's property in Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts, from Jeremiah Foster.3 He served as Town Treasurer in Boxford for many years.2
His will was dated 22 June 1830 and proved in April 1835. He left his wife Mehitabel the use of his real estate for the remainder of her life, with his sister Hannah Peabody having privileges to his buildings and land. His wife also received his livestock and a "great Bible." He left his farm, that formerly was his father's, to Oliver T. Peabody (possibly the husband of his sister Peggy), who was named executor. Oliver Peabody was also to receive his pew in the First Parish Meeting House upon the death of his wife. Other legacies were left to his sisters Peggy Peabody and Hannah Peabody, and to the children of his brothers Nathan and Asa T. and his sister Apphia Warren.4
He and Mehitabel had no children.2

Her will was dated 19 September 1835 and proved in November 1837. Col. Charles Peabody and Capt. Josiah Kimball were named executors. She left legacies to her sister Adams, her sister Wood, her niece Nancy P. Burchstead, her sister Hannah Peabody, the widow Laury Hazen, Sarah Warren, and to Oliver T. Peabody and his daughter Mehitabel. She also directed that two grave stones, or one double stone, be purchased for herself, and for Samuel Stiles and his wife (her husband Ancil's neice). Whatever remained of her estate was to be sold, with the proceeds to collect interest until they could be used to help erect a meeting house for Orthodox preaching.2
She and Ancil had no children.1
