He was born two months after the death of his father, and was raised by his uncle Joseph Lovejoy.2 In 1683 he was granted a tract of land by his grandfather John Lovejoy, with some resulting obligations to make some payments to his sister Frances.2
He and his wife Bathsheba probably moved to Plainfield, Connecticut, sometime between 1711 and 1716.2 He bought land in Plainfield from Philip Preast on 10 May 1715.2 He also sold land there, to Samuel Blunt on 25 October 1721, and to Nathan Rigbe on 17 August 1724.2
The Lovejoy genealogy, "accepting the most reliable of the contradictory evidence," lists the children of John Lovejoy and his wife Bathsheba as follows, with the first three born in Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts, and the last four in Plainfield, Connecticut: Benjamin (probably b 4 April 1706, d 20 November 1772), Richard (probably b 28 June 1709), Anne (b August 1711, probably d bef 1742), John, Timothy (probably b 13 October 1716, d 28 October 1716), Naomi (probably b 19 October 1717), Freelove (probably b 16 February 1720), Elizabeth.2
