Sometime after his brother John's death in 1680, Joseph Lovejoy became guardian of John's son, also named John Lovejoy, who was born two months after his father's death.3 He became a freeman in Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts, on 18 April 1691.2 In 1696 he served as a grand juryman at the Circuit Court in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2

In 1721 he, his brother Ebenezer, and William Foster, bought a large farm from the Frye family.2 He later sold various parts of this land, where his sons probably settled.2
His estate was inventoried on 6 January 1737/38 in Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts, by Benjamin Blanchard, Ebenezer Lovejoy, and Thomas Abbott. It was valued at £409 13s 4d, and included about sixty acres of land and meadow, two cows plus a calf, a colt, an ox, four sheep, swine, a cart, and various farm equipment.2

In his father's will, proved on 31 March 1691 or 1692, he was left the land that had originally been intended for his brother Benjamin, who had died in 1689.2 On 28 March 1695 he exchanged property with his brother Ebenezer, with Ebenezer receiving Nathaniel's farm in Andover, and Nathaniel receiving their father's original homestead, that Ebenezer had inherited.2

He inherited from his father the Lovejoy family homestead.2 On 28 March 1695 he exchanged this property with his brother Nathaniel, receiving in return Nathaniel's farm in Andover.3 In 1721 he, his brother Christopher, and William Foster, bought a large farm from the Frye family.4
