He was a housewright, husbandman, planter, merchant, and sea captain.3 He and his wife Elizabeth lived in Stow, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, until about 1725.3 On 6 February 1722/23 he bought a "mansion house," barn, and 66 acres of meadow, upland, and swamp land in Stow from Benjamin Wellington of Lexington for £250. He sold this property on 23 September 1725 for £300.3 On 10 April 1725 he and Elizabeth sold their rights in her father's estate to her brother Samuel Phipps, of Cambridge, for £150.3
From 1725 to 1727 he and Elizabeth lived in Windham, Windham Co., Connecticut.3 On 1 October 1726 he and others sold about 1/4 acre near the grist and fulling mill in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, to Nathaniel Harris for £15.3
On 1 July 1727 he bought a farm in Windham and about 135 acres in Franklin, New London Co., Connecticut, from John Bradstreet of Norwich for £340. He sold this property on 23 April 1728 to John Sabins of Pomfret, Connecticut, for £750.3 He and Elizabeth then moved to Franklin. At the time, Franklin was known as "West Farms," Norwich.3
He and Elizabeth lived in Georgetown, Craven Co., South Carolina, from 1730 to 1738. He had made several trips as a sea captain, probably to England and the West Indies, and was wrecked off the coast of the southern states. He feared returning north because of some trouble with the British government, and thus stayed in the south, settling in South Carolina.3 He received the following royal grants of land in Craven Co.: on 29 February 1732, about 250 acres on the south side of the Black River, bounded on the north by land he already owned; on 29 September 1732, about 250 more acres on the south side of the Black River; and on 3 January or February 1734/35, about 650 acres on Rum Bluff, on the Waccamaw River in Prince George's Parish.3
He and his wife were involved in several land sales in Craven Co. He mortgaged about 430 acres, along with 40 cattle and two lots in Georgetown, to Joseph Shute for £3,000, probably in 1735. On 17 February 1735 they sold about 500 acres on Sampett Creek near Georgetown to Henry James Dawbauz of London, Eng., for £750. This land had previously been leased to Dawbauz for 5s. On 15 February 1736 he mortgaged a 650-acre plantation, 350 acres on the north side of the Waccamaw River, and 430 acres in Prince George's Parish, to Joseph Weuyg (?) and Richard Lambton for 5s. On 13 October 1736 they sold two tracts of 250 acres each on the Black River to William Brockington, and on 14 October 1736 they sold two plantations of 250 acres each to Brockington for £700.3
He and Elizabeth moved to North Carolina about 1737/38.3
On 7 July 1739 he sold about 430 acres in Craven Co. by "Attorney" for £900.3 On 1 April 1751 he sold two town lots in Georgetown, Craven Co., South Carolina, again by "Attorney," to the widow Mary Wilson for £150.3
He and Elizabeth had the following known children: Jemima (b 23 March 1729, d 1815), John (b 2 April or 19 April 1724, d 21 March 1814), Samuel (b 18 September 1726, d 1788/89), Sarah. They probably had additional children in South and North Carolina. Their sons John and Samuel both served as Colonels in the Revolutionary War.5
