He and his wife Margaret, and at least their first two children, came to New England in 1633.3 They initially settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts,2 moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in 16362, and to Windsor, Connecticut, by 1648.2
He was a merchant, and made at least one return trip to England (and probably more) for meetings associated with his business.2 By 7 December 1638 he had purchased the trading post in Windsor, Connecticut, from the Plymouth Colony, leading to negotiations with the city over the control of this property that continued for more than 15 years.2
In Cambridge he received grants of one acre for a cow yard on 4 November 1633, two acres of land on 2 February 1633/34, a "share of six in the undivided meadow" on 20 August 1635, and five acres of land on 8 February 1635/36.2 In the Cambridge land inventory taken on 10 October 1635 he had twelve tracts totaling over 95 acres, including two houses and a cow house.2
On 17 December 1638 he and his wife Margaret sold land in Devonshire, England, to his brother Thomas, who was then living in Barnstaple, Devonshire. The property may have been part of Matthew's inheritance.2
In the land inventory for Hartford, Connecticut, taken in February 1639/40, he had twelve tracts of land totaling over 210 acres, including a house and mill.2 On 28 August 1661 he was granted 400 acres of upland and 100 acres of meadow by the Connecticut General Court.2
He was made a freeman in Cambridge on 4 March 1634/35.2 He held several important public positions, including deputy from Cambridge to the Massachusetts Bay General Court on 3 March 1635/36, deputy from Windsor to the Connecticut General Court from 1648 to 1651 and 1654 to 1657, assistant in the Connecticut General Court from 1658 to 1666, patentee for the Royal Charter in 1662, and commissioner for the United Colonies in 1664.2
Although he was a prominent and respected figure in the community, and served extensively in public office, he was apparently also "highly contentious." In October 1641, after moving from Cambridge to Hartford, a letter was sent to the Connecticut authorities demanding his return, or that the "debt and damage" he left behind be settled. He was also excommunicated from the church in Hartford by 1644. He appeared often in court, and had several legal disputes with his brother Thomas.2
His will was dated 30 January 1670/71, and proved on 2 March 1670/71. He left all of his estate to his wife Margaret for her use during her lifetime, and his sons John and Thomas and son-in-law Benjamin Newberry were to improve it for her benefit. After her death the estate was to be divided between his three children, with specific legacies to his grandchildren Matthew Allyn and Mary Maudsly, with the exception of small legacies to his servant Mary Griffen and to John Indian.2
His estate was inventoried on 14 February 1670/71 and valued at £466 17s 2d, £160 of which was real estate. The inventory did not include, however, his house and land in Windsor, which had been previously given to his son Thomas at the time of his marriage.2

When he was married Thomas Newberry was deeded several parcels of land in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut, in the area that is now South Windsor, by his father Benjamin Newberry. Included were two tracts of upland, meadow and swamp along the west bank of the Connecticut River extending three miles eastward, half of the farm on the east bank of the river that his father had received from his father-in-law Matthew Allyn, and half of the 250-acre farm on the west bank of the river that his father had been granted by the colony of Connecticut.2
He was selected as fence viewer in Windsor on 4 February 1684/85, and served on a committee to fix the boundary between Hartford and Windsor in January 1685/86.2
He died intestate, and Return Strong was appointed administrator of his estate. His real estate was valued at £270, and his personal property at £74 0s 6d, with debts of £45 5s 2d. The estate wasn't fully settled until 8 March 1705/06.2

When his father died in 1680, Benjamin Newberry received about half of his father's land, and acquired a considerable amount of additional property during his lifetime.2
He was made an ensign in the south Windsor militia in May 1696. On 13 December 1704 he was appointed as captain of a Connecticut force of 200 men sent to help defend towns in Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, during Queen Anne's War. In June 1709, as a captain in Col. William Whiting's regiment, he participated in an expedition against Quebec. They camped at Wood Creek near Albany, New York, for several months, and in late fall the expedition was canceled when reinforcements expected from England didn't arrive.2
His will was dated 14 June 1709, just before he left on the military expedition against Quebec, and proved on 2 January 1709/10. His estate was inventoried on 31 March 1710 and on 17 May 1720, and valued at £1285 11s 6d. He left £100 to his wife Hannah, plus the use of his estate until his children became of age. He left £200 to his son Benjamin, £150 to his son Roger, and £100 each to his daughters Hannah and Abigail. By the time his estate was finally settled, on 6 March 1718/19, his daughters Hannah and Abigail had died, and another daughter, Marah, had been born. In the final settlement his wife Hannah received £100, his sons Benjamin and Roger received £261 1s 7d and £258 1s 5d, respectively, and his daughter Marah received £117 16s 11d. On 3 April 1723 his wife Hannah petitioned for and was granted her 1/3 dower rights to the estate.2

About 1705, when he became of age, Joseph Newberry received from his father's estate the south half of "the great tract" east of the Connecticut River, including the house.2 He received the northern half of the tract in 1709, in the will of his brother Benjamin Newberry. The entire tract was 39 rods (643.5 ft.) along the river, and extended three miles to the east.2
He became a freeman in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut, on 30 April 1717.2 He served as fence viewer in 1718, and as highway surveyor in 1731 and 1732.2 In November 1735 he was chosen as sergeant of the south company of Windsor, east of the Connecticut River.2
He and Sarah had the following known children, all born in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut: Joseph (b 11 January 1709/10, d 28 January 1797), Thomas (b 7 November 1714, d 24 May 1735), Sarah (b 14 August 1716, probably d before 30 August 1751), Benjamin (b 20 May 1721, d 23 January 1804).3
