He graduated in 1726 from Yale College in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, with an A. B. degree, and later received an A. M. degree.2 After graduation he became a successful merchant in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.2
He was first elected as deputy to the Connecticut Assembly in May 1735, and was re-elected every six months thereafter through May 1740.2
He became an ensign in the Connecticut militia in May 1728, and a lieutenant in May 1729. In the fall of 1740, as captain of a company of Connecticut militia, he was part of an English expedition against the Spanish West Indies. The expedition didn't get there until March 1741, and suffered heavy losses in an assault on Carthagena, Columbia, on 9 April. The expedition began retreating toward Jamaica on 17 April. By then the rainy season had begun, and many men contracted yellow fever, including Capt. Newberry.
Family tradition says that during the voyage to Jamaica a storm hit, and combined with the yellow fever, drove many of the men to despair. They began drinking, and became hopelessly drunk. Capt. Newberry supposedly got out of his sick bed, rallied some of the men, and took command of the ship. He held the drunken soldiers in irons for two days, until the storm passed and the men sobered up. He then returned to his sick bed and soon died.2
His will was dated 5 September 1740, and proved on 9 September 1741. He left his wife Elizabeth £150, 1/3 of his moveable estate, and the use of 1/3 of his real estate for as long as she remained a widow. His son Roger was left £200, and his sons Benjamin and Thomas were each left £150, all from his real estate. His daughters Elizabeth, Abigail, Hannah, and Sarah were each left £100, which they were to receive at age 21, or at their marriage. His mulatto servant "Tony or Benoni" was to be freed at age 25.2 His estate was inventoried on 17 November 1741, and again on 11 December 1749, and valued at £5590 4s 7d.2
He and Elizabeth had the following known children: Elizabeth (b 28 June 1728, d 4 June 1749), Hannah (b 3 October 1729, d 5 February 1806), Abigail (b 5 December 1733), Roger (b 29 June 1735, d 13 February 1814), Sarah (b 31 December 1736, d 3 September 1783), Benjamin (b 11 December 1738, d abt 1788), Thomas (b 1 August 1740, d 5 April 1804).3
