In 1860 Joseph Jones and his wife Anna were living in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, along with their son Edward and daughter Anna.2 In the census his occupation is listed as "dealer."2
After the death of their daughter Phebe and her husband William Rudolph within six months of each other in 1861, he and his wife Anna took in their daughters Emma, Anna, and Francis. Their son Willie, however, was sent to a boys' school in Philadelphia.1,3
Not long afterwards they moved to Maroa, Macon Co., Illinois, where their son Ed had purchased some land (which was later lost). Their granddaughter Emma had contracted tuberculosis, and they hoped the change would improve her health.3,1 They are listed there in the 1870 census with their son Edward and daughter Anna, their granddaughters Anna and Fanny Rudolph, and Robert Elsworth who was helping work the farm. Joseph and Edward are both listed as farmers, with real estate worth $3000 and $5000, respectively.1
The identification of Edward and Anna Jones as children of Joseph and Anna, instead of son and daughter-in-law, is based on information in the Bowditch genealogy, in a section written by Joseph's great-granddaughter Helen (Tryon) Bowditch. She writes that when Emma, Annie, and Fannie Rudolph were taken in by their grandparents after their parents' death, also in the household were an Uncle Ed and an Aunt Anna, both unmarried.3
