He was admitted sizar (i.e., as a student receiving a stipend in return for working as a servant for other students) at Peterhouse College in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, on 2 July 1625.1 He graduated with a B. A. degree in 1628/29.1 He began practicing as a preacher, but his Puritan beliefs didn't conform to the established practices of the church. Puritans were often being persecuted, and his friends convinced him to give up his ministry and become a physician.2
However, his desire to resume his ministry soon led him to emigrate to New England. In 1637 he and his wife Anne left England, along with his brother William and sisters Anne and Martha and their families. His widowed mother Anne was also with them, but died at sea shortly after leaving England. He is said to have gone on board in disguise to avoid his persecutors.1,2 During the voyage he preached two sermons a day. One passenger, when being questioned about fishing on the Sabbath day, supposedly said "that he did not know when the Lord's day was; he thought every day was a Sabbath day, for they did nothing but pray and preach all the week long."2
After arriving he and his family lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for a short time1, then moved to Salem later that same year1, where he was made a freeman on 2 November 1637 (the Fiske genealogy says March 1637/38).1,2 He served as minister and schoolteacher in Salem from 1637 to 16411, then moved to Wenham, Massachusetts.1
On 2 March 1642 he and a Mr. Smith granted 20 acres of land to the town of Wenham, on either side of the meeting house. To encourage growth of the area, the land was divided into two-acre lots to be granted to settlers provided they build houses there.2
He formed a church in Wenham, and served as its minister from 1644 to 1656.1 He, along with most of the members of his church, then moved to Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts,1 where he served as pastor and physician until his death in 1677.1
His will was dated 8 June 1676 and proved on 22 February 1676/77. His estate was inventoried on 11 February 1676/77 and valued at £703 3s 10d. It included his homestead with sheep pasture and meadow, 34 acres on the "great brooke," 6 acres on the Merrimack River, uplands, 20 acres that were part of his son John's homestead, other meadow lands, a library worth £60, and a still.1,2
