Charles W. Mathews1,2

b. July 1844
Charles W. Mathews was born in July 1844 in Ohio.3 He married first Drucilla Brazee, daughter of Peter Brazee and Lucretia Woodin, about 1866, based on the birth date of their son Perry, and the 1930 census, which lists Charles's age as 21 at his first marriage.1,3,4 He married second Lucinda Ann Mayberry in late 1872, based on the 1910 census, which says they had been married 38 years, and the 1900 census, which lists Lucinda's birth date as September 1853, together with the 1930 census, which says she was 19 when first married.3,5,4
He and his first wife Drucilla were living in Manlius Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1870.1 They had two known children, Perry (b abt 1868) and Charles (b abt 1872).1,2
He and his second wife Lucinda were living in Thompson, Geauga Co., Ohio, in 1880, Ash Twp., Monroe Co., Michigan, in 1900, Seattle, King Co., Washington, in 1910, and in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, in 1920 and 1930.2,3,5,6,4 They had the following known children: William (b abt 1873), Stella (b 11 July 1876), Rena (b abt 1879), Edna (b 22 October 1887), Frank (b 22 June 1889).2,3,7,8,9
The identification of Drucilla Brazee as the first wife of Charles Mathews, and the division of his children among his two marriages, requires some explanation. In the 1880 census entry for Drucilla's parents Peter and Lucretia Brazee in Pierpont Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio, a Charles Mathews (age 9, born in Michigan, with father and mother born in Ohio) was listed with them as a grandson. This implies that one of their daughters married a Mathews. Their daughters Olive, Martha, Sarah, and Vesta were all married to men not named Mathews by 1871 (see their records for details and sources), leaving Drucilla as the probable mother of Charles Mathews. In the 1870 census, Charles and Drusilla Mathews (age 25 and 19, both born in Ohio) are listed in Manlius Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, with Perry Mathews (age 2, born in Ohio). In 1880 Charles (age 35, born in Ohio) and Lucinda Mathews (age 27, born in Canada) are listed in Thompson, Geauga Co., Ohio, with children Perry (age 12, born in Ohio), Charles (age 8, born in Michigan), William, Stella, and Rena (ages 7, 3, and 1, all born in Ohio). Charles and Lucinda are listed together again in 1900 and 1910, with children Edna and Frank, and Lucinda is listed in both censuses as having had five children, all then living.
From this, it seems probable that Charles married first Drucilla Brazee, and had children Perry and Charles. (Note that the son Charles was listed twice in the 1880 census, once with his father and stepmother in Geauga Co., Ohio, and once with his maternal grandparents in neighboring Ashtabula Co., Ohio.) He married Lucinda as his second wife, with whom he had the five children William, Stella, Rena, Edna and Frank.
The conclusion that Charles's first wife Drucilla was Drucilla Brazee is strengthened by Perry Mathews' marriage record, which lists his parents as Chas. W. Mathews and Lucinda A. Brazee, and the witnesses as C. W. Mathews and Lucinda A. Mathews. Although his mother's given name is listed as Lucinda instead of Drucilla, it seems likely that this is simply an error in the record, combining the given name of his stepmother with the maiden name of his actual mother. From the census data, Perry's mother was clearly Drucilla, not Lucinda.
The division of Charles's children between his two marriages is strengthened by the transcript of Stella's birth record, which lists her parents as Charles W. Mathews and Lucinda Ann Mayberry. Thus, his four youngest children Stella, Rena, Edna, and Frank were by his second wife Lucinda. Since the censuses indicate that Lucinda had five children, that she and Charles were married in 1872, and that William was born about 1873, William was likely also Lucinda's son.10,1,2,3,5,11,7

Lucinda L. Masters1,2,3

b. April 1846
Lucinda L. Masters was born in April 1846 in Pennsylvania.4 She married Edward M. Woodin, son of Benjamin Franklin Woodin and Esther Brownell, about 1864 (based on the 1900 census, which says they had been married for 36 years, and Edward's death certificate, which says he first married at age 21).1,2,3,4,5
She and her husband Edward were living in Oakland, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, in 1870.1 They moved to Romeo, Macomb Co., Michigan, sometime between 1874 and 1880 (based on the birth location of their daughter Frances and the 1880 census).6
They were probably still living in Romeo in 1900. Although he is listed as Joseph instead of Edward in the 1900 census, his wife is listed as Lucinda L., the birth dates and locations of Joseph and Lucinda, and his occupation, are consistent with the information on Edward and Lucinda Woodin in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. In addition, their daughter Esther (Woodin) Hicks is listed nearby with her family. Living with them were three grandchildren, listed in the census as Olive Hicks (born June 1887 in Missouri), Henry W. Hicks (born October 1892 in Michigan), and Alice Hicks (born February 1894 in Michigan). It should be noted, however, that Henry and Alice, at least, should have been listed with the surname Wellsted; they were children of Edward and Lucinda's daughter Frances and her husband Frank Wellstead.4,7,8,9 She continued to live in Romeo after her husband's death. In 1910 her daughter Esther Hicks and her family were living with her.10
She and Edward had six children, with just one living until 1900, but names are known for only two: Esther L. (b December 1869, d 6 October 1910) and Frances (b abt 1874, d 22 April 1897).5,4,1,11,6,12
