He learned the art of likeness taking, and, so far as I could learn, was the first to pursue that work in the Eastern Counties. The system was called the “ambrotype,” the impression being made of glass, and preceded the “tintype” and “photograph.” It was while engaged in this work he met Alex. McDonald (Bard na Ceapach) invited him into his saloon, took his picture and presented it to him. This, of course, was a good inspiration for the bard, and he composed a very amusing song on the occasion."¹
