Life
He was the eldest son of Sir John de Forbes (died 1405), Sheriff of Aberdeen, and Coroner of that shire, by his wife, Margaret, a daughter of Kennedy of Dunure.
Alexander de Forbes fought at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, and appears among the Scottish forces sent to the assistance of Charles, Dauphin of France, afterwards King Charles VII, and had a share in the victory obtained over the English at Beaugé, in Anjou, on 22 March 1424. But soon after, at the desire of King James I of Scotland, then a prisoner in England, Forbes quit the French service and subsequently obtained three Safe-conducts at different times to visit England, with one hundred persons in his retinue each time, to wait upon his sovereign.
He was created a Lord of Parliament sometime after 1436. The precise date of the peerage creation is not known (although Brown gives 1440), but in a Precept, dated 12 July 1442, he is already styled Lord Forbes.
Family
The first Lord Forbes married Lady Elizabeth (or Mary), only daughter of George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus, a granddaughter of King Robert II of Scotland, by whom he had two sons and three daughters. He was succeeded by his eldest son:

He was created 1st Earl of Angus [Scotland] on 9 April 1389. He fought in the Battle of Homildon Hill on 14 September 1402, where he was captured by the English. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.
From Wikipedia
George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus (1380–1403) was a mediaeval Scottish nobleman.
Life
He was born at Tantallon Castle, East Lothian, Scotland. The bastard son of William, 1st Earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart, Dowager Countess of Mar & Countess of Angus and Lady Abernethy in her own right.
He was seen as the product of incest as his mother was the widow of Earl William's wife's brother, Thomas, 13th Earl of Mar.
Earl William's legitimate wife Margaret of Mar had already produced an heir for her Lord in 1358, James, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar inherited upon his father's death in 1384.
In 1389, Margaret of Angus relinquished her title in favour of her son, but he did not assume it until his betrothal in 1397 to the princess Mary, daughter of King Robert III. Margaret of Angus' influence must have been considerable - in addition to obtaining a royal bride for her illegitimate son, she persuaded King Robert to confirm him in his style of Earl of Angus, and also to bestow upon him the lordships of Abernethy, (Perthshire) and Bonkill, (Berwickshire); and "to endow him and his spouse with the justiciary fees of the County of Forfar, to ratify all gifts, entails, and leases made or to be made by Isabel, Countess of Mar, to the said Jorge her brothir" -(Maxwell).
James 2nd Earl of Douglas, was killed without issue in 1388, at the Battle of Otterburn, and the Earldom of Mar, and all non-entailed Douglas possessions passed to his sister Isabel. The earldom of Douglas passed to a cousin, a bastard son of The Good Sir James Douglas, the aptly named Archibald the Grim.
The descendants of Archibald formed the famed Black line, and those of George the equally famed and longer lived Red Line.
Angus does not appear to have taken much interest in Public life, although his name appears on various minor charters. In 1402 however, he was dispatched under orders of the Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland to accompany Murdoch, Earl of Fife and the Earl of Moray to assist the Earl of Douglas during his invasion of Northumberland. That incursion ended at the disastrous field of Homildon Hill, where the Scots were routed and all of the above taken prisoner. Both Moray and Angus died of the Plague whilst captive.4,3Family: Lady Mary Stewart b. c 1380

By an illicit affair with William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, husband of the Earl of Mar's sister, she became the mother of George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus (c. 1380-1403), and secured a charter of her estates for her son, to whom in 1389 the title was granted by King Robert II.

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Angus [S., 1329] on 9 December 1331. He fought in the taking of Berwick in May 1355, where he commanded. He was one of the eight lords, of whom three were to place themselves in the hands of the English as security for the release of King David II. He held the office of Great Chamberlain [Scotland] from 1357 to 1358. On 18 August 1359 he had a safe conduct for four ships of Flanders, but he broke his engagement. In March 1359/60 he was charged to return to England to fulfill his obligations as hostage.
Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus (b.b.1331-1361) was a medieval Scottish nobleman.
He was the son of John Stewart of Bonkyll and Margaret de Abernethy. Stewart was an infant when his father died and inherited his estates and titles in Berwickshire, Abernethy and Angus.
In 1353 he married Margaret Sinclair, a daughter of William de St Clair of Rosslyn. (St Clair was slain in 1330, along with Sir James Douglas, at the Battle of Teba whilst accompanying King Robert's Heart to the Holy Land.) The petition for this marriage was sent to the Holy See, with support from John II of France, which would suggest that the young Angus spent time at the French court.
Present at the siege of Berwick in 1355, Angus was one of the lords that negotiated the release of David II following his 10 year captivity following the Battle of Neville's Cross.
At some point in the late 1350s, Stewart was made Great Chamberlain of Scotland, an office he lost at some point before 1359, when Walter de Biggar was in office.
Angus was considered one of the conspirators in the murder of King David's mistress, Catherine Mortimer, at Soutra in 1360, and was duly imprisoned. Whilst being held at Dumbarton Castle, he succumbed to Bubonic plague in 1361.
