Shortly after Robert the Bruce's coronation at Scone he was forced by the English to retreat into Argyll, in an attempt to reach his Clan Campbell allies. However the Clan MacDougall surprised the Bruce and defeated him in what was known as the Battle of Dalrigh. The king escaped but left behind what was described as a magnificent example of Celtic jewellery, known as the Brooch of Lorne and it became one of the Clan MacDougall's great treasures. Three years later Robert the Bruce led three thousand battle hardened veterans into Argyll against the MacDougalls. John MacDougall of Lorne set an ambush for them but in the ensuing Battle of the Pass of Brander the MacDougalls were defeated and forced to flee. The MacDougall's lands were then forfeited by the king and he gave them to the Campbells for their loyalty. The MacDougalls never regained their island possessions, however their fortunes were restored to a great extent when Euan MacDougall married a granddaughter of Robert the Bruce. Most of their mainland lands were returned in a royal charter from David II of Scotland.2Family:

He and his son Maurice FitzJohn FitzGerald perished at the Battle of Callann in 1261, fighting against Fínghin Mac Carthaigh, King of Desmond.
They were succeeded by the son of Maurice, Thomas FitzGerald, 2nd Baron Desmond.
The FitzMaurice Barons and later Earls of Kerry continue in the male line with the current Petty-FitzMaurice Marquesses of Lansdowne, but they descend from the 1st Baron Desmond's nephew, Thomas FitzMaurice, 1st Baron of Kerry, son of his brother Maurice FitzThomas. Thus in fact they represent a "sister" branch to the FitzGeralds of Desmond. However this technically makes them slightly closer to the FitzGeralds of Desmond than either are to the Offaly-Kildare-Leinster Geraldines, represented by the modern Dukes of Leinster, who descend from Gerald FitzMaurice, 1st Lord of Offaly, uncle of the 1st Baron Desmond.
Marriages and issue
John was the father of Maurice FitzJohn FitzGerald, who died with him at the Battle of Callan. John was succeeded in his baronial title by Maurice's son, Thomas FitzGerald, 2nd Baron Desmond.2Family:

The Scottish chronicle writer Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie recorded that John Stewart built a lavish temporary palace near Pitlochry to entertain James V of Scotland and his mother Margaret Tudor while hunting (circa 1532). The Palace was made of tree branches, but moated and hung with tapestry and silk inside with glass windows and the lavish food for three days cost £1000. When the royal party left, the Earl's Highland men burnt the lodging to the astonishment of the Italian Papal envoy present who was told that this was local custom.
In July 1536, James V granted the Earl a free barony of the lands of Glenlochy in Perthshire. The Earl was involved in promoting royal rule in Perthshire. He became involved in the Campbell family struggle with the MacGregors, and in October 1530 expelled the MacGregors from the house of the Isle of Loch Rannoch. The Earl was also a rival of the Menzies family who held lands in the same region. A recent historian, Jamie Cameron, suggests that the King's hunting trip described by Pitscottie was a royal visit to the area in September 1532 recorded in official documents, in part to adjudicate on local issues.
John Stewart died in 1542, possibly from a fever caught during the military campaign on the English border that lead to the Battle of Solway Moss. He married Grizzel Rattray and was succeeded as Earl by their son John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl.3Family: Grizel Rattray Countess of Atholl b. 1511, d. 1537
