1871, East Lake Ainslie, Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada, According to the 1871 Census John owned a farm of 100 acresone village building lot with one dwelling house and two warehouses or stores. He owned one car, wagon or sled.

He occupied 100 acres, 20 of which were improved, 15 acres in pasture. One acre of potatoes yeilded 120 bushels. five acres of hay yeilded six tons.

He owned one colt or filly, two milch cows, three other horned cattle and ten sheep. Three sheep were killed or sold for slaughter or export.

John's farm produced 100 pounds of butter, 40 pounds of cheese and 25 pounds of wool, 25 yards of home-made cloth and flannel.

John produced 20 cubic feet of spars or sided timber (not hickory) five censu standard pine logs, 120 census standard spruuce and other logs and 52 cords of firewood.²

Son of John- Upper Margaree
John C. MacFarlane passed to his eternal reward on February 5th, 1954. He was in his 89th year. He was the second last surviving member of the late John MacFarlane (Johnny) and Jessie MacLellan and was born at Upper Margaree. His wife Christine Kennedy predeceased him by seventeen (17) years. Mr. MacFarlane was light keeper at Margaree Island for a number of years and then purchased a farm at Broad Cove where he lived until his death. He is survived by six sons; John Arthur Chelsea, Mass., Alexander in Dorchester, Mass., Albert in Halifax, and Dan Larry at home, Michael in Somerville, Mass. Two daughters Sadie, Mrs. Long Somerville. Mass., and Catherine Vancouver B.C. One daughter died in infancy. He is survived by one sister Mrs. Archie Kennedy New Bedford, Mass.²

Biography*: The 1871 Census lists John as going to school. The 1881 Census lists John as a farmer's son and as going to school. the 1901 Census lists him as a farmer who could both read and write.

Mr. MacFarlane was light keeper at Margaree Island for a number of years and then purchased a farm at Broad Cove where he lived until his death. This was originally called Sea Wolf Island.^24,4,5,6,7
