One hour after the family returned from her funeral, a younger brother John Joseph also died of the flu. Thus, two brothers and a sister died of the "Spanish flu" in less than a month. Her brother Alex recovered from this illness.⁴

On January 19^th, John Joseph Gillis, aged 15 years. Deceased was taken with appendicitis a few days before his brother died, and was immediately sent to St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, where he was operated on. After the operation, Spanish influenza set in, which was followed by pneumonia. Taken back home, his mother and sister did all that could possibly be done for him, but to no avail. The fiat had gone forth and no earthly power could stay the hand of death. Deceased were children of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Gillis, of Upper Margaree, Inverness County, who have the sincere sympathy of the community in their irreparable loss. All were good dutiful children, and having received the last rites of Holy Church before they died, it is to be hoped that they are now enjoying the beatific vision of heaven. R. I. P.²
