S. W. Margaree
On Feby (sic) 1, 1947, the parish of S.W. Margaree lost one of its oldest women when Mrs. Annie Gillis, widow of the late Donald J. Gillis, was called to her eternal reward. She was the daughter of the late Dougald MacFarlane and Catherine MacDougall and had attained the age of 87 years.
Though her health began to fail several years ago, she was able to be up and around mostly every day until a week prior to her death where she took a weak turn. The priest was sent for at once and administered the last rites of the Church.
Of late years she passed a considerable portion of her time visiting her daughters and it was with one of them and her son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Coady, who tenderly cared for her in her declining years that she passed away. He, daughter Rose Ann, Mrs. John H. MacDonnell, also was with her for several days before she died.
The lure of the city never appealed to her. She was content with life in the country, and the well kept home always was, and still is, proverbial for its charity, kindness and hospitality. She was highly respected by her neighbors and acquaintances, and her memory will long be revered by all who knew her.
During the last years of her life she devoted most of her time to prayer and meditation. Her rosary and Gaelic prayerbook were her constant companions, her death was calm and peaceful – a beautiful ending to a quiet and holy life.
Her husband died in 1924; one son, James, died in 1920; one daughter Mary, Mrs. Angus D. MacLellan, Dunvegan, died last April.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters; Dougald, teaching school in the West; John Alex, at home; Eliza, Mrs. Francis P. Coady, Margaree Forks; Rose Ann, Mrs. John H. MacDonnell, Judique. Also surviving are one sister and two brothers; Mrs. Malcolm H. Gillis, Upper Margaree; Joseph A. MacFarlane, New Bedford; and D.D. MacFarlane, S.W. Margaree.
She leaves behind 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Revd. Alexander A. MacLellan, C.S.S.R., is her grand-son.
Solemn high mass for the repose of her soul was celebrated by her nephew, Rev. D. MacEachern, P.P., Arisaig, assisted by her pastor Rev. J. H. MacEachern as deacon, and Rev. R. Duprey, C.C., Margaree, as sub-deacon. Leading in the choir were Sisters of St. Theresa’s Convent, Margaree Forks. The funeral was largely attended. The three priests officiated at the graveside. The pall bearers were Joseph Walker, John Arch Gillis, John MacLellan, James G. MacDonnell, Jim Dan Gillis and Jerome Gillis. R.I.P.4

Upper Margaree, C. B.
At Upper Margaree, C. B., September 5, 1952, there passed on the her eternal reward, one of the community’s oldest and most respected citizens in the person of Mrs. Margaret Gillis, widow of the late Malcolm H. Gillis. The deceased bore her long illness with patience, courage and resignation to the will of her Creator. Despite her illness she was possessed of all her faculties and was able to converse freely with her family and friends to the time of her death. Her whole life was one of prayer and devotion to God and His Immaculate Mother, and when death came she was indeed prepared to meet her Divine Judge, having frequently received the holy rites of the Church during the several months previous to her death.
The late Mrs. Gillis was born at South West Margaree, 83 years ago a daughter of the late Dougald MacFarlane and Katherine MacDougall. Her father was descendant of the pioneer MacFarlane’s of Glenorchy, Argyleshire, Scotland, who settled on the river of South West Margaree.
Sixty-one years ago the deceased married Malcolm H. Gillis, Upper Margaree, and had a family of ten sons and seven daughters, six of whom predeceased her. Besides the surviving members of her family, she is survived by a brother, Joseph A. MacFarlane, New Bedford, Mass; forty-five grand-children and eight great-grand-children.
The deceased’s life was one of hard work and devotion to her home and family. Her neighborly qualities were outstanding, as she was ready at all times to assist those in need, and open her doors in hospitality to the wayfarer. Her passing, though not entirely unexpected, came as a shock to her family and friends, who always knew her as a Christian mother and a friendly neighbor, and as such she will be fondly remembered.
The high esteem in which she was held was testified to by the large number of Masses and spiritual offerings tendered for the repose of her soul. Her funeral which was attended by scores of friends and relatives was held Monday, Sept. 8, after Solemn Requiem Mass by her nephew, Rev. Dougald MacEachern, as celebrant, Rev. Joseph Campbell, a grand-nephew, as deacon, Rev. John Campbell, as sub-deacon, and Rev. D. F.
