Birth*: John Rankin was born circa 1775 in Lochaber, Inverness-shire, Scotland.¹

Biography*: John Rankin, the eighth of that name, commonly known as John "the Gereral" and John "the Gentleman," lived in Lochaber, Scotland toward the end of the eighteenth century. He was married twice. We are not certain who was his first wife because of differences of opinion found among the "seanachies." However there is a family tradition that when John's first wife was on her deathbed, she was so concerned about the welfare of her children, at that time very young, that she asked her husband and her neice to marry each other in case of her decease. This they apparently did. It seems that John's first wife was either Mary Beaton, daughter of Alexander of Skye, or Catherine Campbell, daughter of "Aonghas Mac Shomhairle Mhoir."¹
