°MacLellan, Archibald 1805-1900
The Casket, July 19, 1900 - There passed away to his eternal reward on July 8, 1900, Archibald MacLellan of Broad Cove, Inv. Co., commonly known as Gilleaspiuq-Mac-an-Tailleur. He was born at Morar, Inverness-shire, Scotland, May 8, 1805 and was therefore in his 96th year. He emigrated with his parents to America in the ship "Three Brothers" with Captain Matheson in 1815. They sailed from Stornaway, Lewis, on Aug. 20, and landed in Pictou, Oct. 10. They lived for a few years at the South River, Antigonish Co., and removed to Broad Cove in 1820, where the boys took up farms and lived in comfort for the rest of their days.. The deceased was married to Margaret MacFarlane, Nov. 27, 1828, and enjoyed married life together for the long period of seventy-two years. Enjoyed they certainly did; for such was an excellent example of inductry, mutual affection and piety as this respected couple has given is not easily surpassed, and the large concourse of friends that visited him in his last illness, and followed his remains to the grace testifies to the esteem in which the good "Old Archy" was held by his acquaintances far and near. In his declining years when his sight and hearing began to fail him and he could not enjoy the usual company of his friends he might be found, when not engaged in prayer, sitting down quietly in his room, composing songs and hymns, many of which possess considerable merit. He had a family of seven sons and eight daughters, sevety-five grand children and fifty-six great grand children, the most of whom are living to cherish his memory. May he rest in peace.2
From "History of Inverness County"
Even in his youth he was both intelligent and obedient. He was born in Morar in 1805 and died in dunvegan in 1900. In his mere boyhood he took to fishing as well as farming, and was specially successful in the latter pursuit. It used to be said that he had peculiar luck as a fisherman; but in our experience the man is usually Captain of his own luck. Wolfes Island, now Margaree Island, was always a capital fishing station. It is said that Archibald MacLellan was the first white man who slept there. He not only fished himself, but also bought the fish from other fishermen, and had it conveyed to market in French schooners. He also built a wharf on the Island. When the fishing season ended he returned to the farm where he stayed and worked till the sea called him again the following spring. In this way Archibald became very comfortable."
"This Archibald MacLellan was a gifted man with some education. In his old age he took to writing in verse. He composed some Gaelic songs and hymns which, according to some competent judges, invoke the graces of the Muses. Had he been trained in that poetic pusuit he might have ranked among the celebrities of song." This son, being the oldest, was his father’s first help in the wilderness, and he did help from a very early age. Even in his youth he was both intelligent and obedient. He was born in Morar in 1805 and died at Dunvegan in 1900. In his mere boyhood he took to fishing as well as farming, and was specially successful in the latter pursuit. It .used to be said that he had peculiar luck as a fisherman; but in our experience the man is usually the Captain of his own luck. When the fishing season ended he returned to the farm where he stayed and worked till the sea called him again the following spring. In this way Archibald became very comfortable.
In 1828, he married Mary MacFarlane, daughter of Archibald MacFarlane of S. W. Margaree, with issue: Angus, James, John, Donald, Joseph, Nancy, Jessie, Margaret, Marjory, Flora, Catherine Mary and Isabel. Tlie daughters were all married in the neighborhood of the old home. We are not aware that any one of this fine family ever left the County of Inverness. This Archibald MacLellan was a gifted man with some education. In his old age he took to writing in verse. He composed some Gaelic songs and hymns which, according to some competent judges, invoke the graces of the Muses. Had he been trained in that poetic pursuit he might have ranked among the celebrities
of song. But, better than all this: Gillesburg Mac an Tailoir was a good man, and we sincerely hope he now shares the eternal glory of the real Immortals.5,6,7,3,15 Family: Mary MacFarlane b. 1808, d. 14 May 1905
