January 7, 1937 William J. MacFarlane passed away at the age of 75 years. Born at lower Springfield, when a young man he left home for Vancouver, B.C. where he spent 30 years. In 1920 he returned home and bought a farm at Lower South River where he lived until ill health forced him to retire, moving to Antigonish town where he spent his remaining years. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. John B. MacPherson, Lower Springfield and a brother Angus in the West. A brother John who also lived on the old homestead predeceased him by several years.5

Springfield
There passed to her eternal reward Nov. 10th, 1949, at the home of her daughter at Glen Road, Mrs. John B. MacPherson, nee (Catherine MacFarlane) in her 95th year. Her husband predeceased her by 29 years. Always peace loving and kind, she was to young and old alike and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Consoled by the last Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, administered by Rev. Bernard Chisholm, she resigned her soul to Gods(sic) Holy Will and peacefully passed away.
She leaves to mourn their loss four sons, Dan, Colin in Seatle(sic), Wash., Angus in Fairbanks, Alaska, James, on the old homestead in Springfield, Mrs. Bernard Hogan (Ann) Seatle(sic), Wash., Mrs. Ronald Chisholm (Mary) whom she resided with the past seven years. Five sons and two daughters predeceased her.
Her remains were taken to St. Andrew’s Church Sunday at 3 p.m. then to the South River Cemetery where they were tenderly laid to rest.
Services at the grave were conducted by rev. John H. MacDonald.
Pall bearers were: Ronald Chisholm, John J. Chisholm, Joseph MacGillivray, John R. MacInnis, Earl MacPherson, and Phonse Kennedy. R. I. P.11
