  • Birth*: Margaret Stewart Princess of Scotland & Dauphine of France was born on 25 December 1424 in Scotland.1

  • Death*: Margaret Stewart Princess of Scotland & Dauphine of France died on 16 August 1445 in Châlons-sur-Marne, Marne, France, at age 20.1
  • Burial*: She was buried after 16 August 1445 in Saint-Laon Church, Thouars, Deux-Sevres Department, France.1
  • Biography*: Margaret of Scotland (French: Marguerite d'Écosse) (25 December 1424 – 16 August 1445) was a Princess of Scotland and the Dauphine of France. She was the firstborn child of King James I of Scotland and Queen Joan Beaufort.

She married the eldest son of the king of France, Louis, 9th Dauphin, at eleven years old. Their marriage was unhappy, and she died childless at age 20, apparently of a fever.

    Early life
She was born in Perth, Scotland to James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort, a cousin of Henry VI of England. Margaret was the first of six daughters and twin sons born to her parents (her surviving brother, James, would become James II of Scotland at six years old).

    Marriage
Margaret was Charles VII of France's diplomatic choice for daughter-in-law. The marriage was forced upon Charles's thirteen-year-old son, Louis, which did not help their relationship. However, royal marriages in the 15th century were always political. There are no direct accounts from Louis or Margaret of their first impressions of each other, and it is mere speculation to say whether or not they actually had negative feelings for each other. Several historians think that Louis had a predetermined attitude to hate his wife. But it is universally agreed that Louis entered the ceremony and the marriage itself dutifully, as evidenced by his formal embrace of Margaret upon their first meeting on 24 June 1436, the day before their wedding.

Margaret and Louis' marriage shows both the nature of medieval royal diplomacy and the precarious position of the French monarchy. The marriage took place 25 June 1436 in the afternoon in the chapel of the castle of Tours and was presided by the Archbishop of Reims. By the standards of the time, it was a very plain wedding. Louis, thirteen, looked clearly more mature than his bride, eleven. Margaret looked like a beautiful “doll,” perhaps because she was treated as such by her in-laws. Charles wore “grey riding pants” and “did not even bother to remove his spurs.” The Scottish guests were quickly hustled out after the wedding reception. This was seen as something of a scandal by the Scots. King Charles’ attire and the speed with which the guests were hustled out was considered an insult to Scotland, which was an important ally in France's war with the English. However, this spoke to the impoverished nature of the French court at this time. They simply could not afford an extravagant ceremony or to host their Scottish guests for any longer than they did.

Following the ceremony, “doctors advised against consummation” because of the relative immaturity of the bride and bridegroom. Margaret continued her studies and Louis went on tour with Charles to loyal areas of the kingdom. Even at this time, Charles was taken aback by the intelligence and temper of his son. During this tour, Louis was named Dauphin by Charles, as is traditional for the eldest son of the king.

Margaret was considered lovely, gracious and very beautiful, with a certain ability to write poesy and rhymes, though no example of her compositions survived destruction at her husband's hands after her death. She was also very interested in the French court's social and gallant life. She was a favourite of her father-in-law Charles VII of France and popular among the courtiers. However, she felt herself alien amongst the French court and became depressed.

She had a strained relationship with her husband, the future king of France, mainly because of Louis' hatred of his father. Charles VII ordered the marriage, and Margaret frequently supported the king against her husband. It is said that she wore a strongly-tied corset because of her fear of pregnancies, ate green apples and drank apple vinegar. Her unhappy marriage furthered her depression, as did the gossip regarding her by supporters of Louis.

    Death
On 16 August 1445, between ten and eleven at night, she died in Châlons-sur-Marne, Marne, France at the age of 20. On Saturday, 7 August, she and her ladies had joined the court on a short pilgrimage. It was very hot, and when she returned, she undressed in her stone chamber. The next morning she was feverish, the doctor diagnosed the inflammation of the lungs. She died, raving against a Jamet de Tillay, a Breton soldier, in favour of her father-in-law, King Charles (James surprised Margaret at her habitual poetry reading, when there were no candles, only a good fire in the mantelpiece; he stuck a candle into her face, sniggered and afterwards went around, talking about "wanton princesses". Louis was cold to Margaret, and she attributed his coldness to the gossip spread by Jamet. She died, protesting her faithfulness to her husband, and accused Jamet of killing her with his words). Melancholic and distressed by slander against her, she sank into a final languor before dying. Her last words, in response to others' urgings to rouse herself and live, were supposedly Fi de la vie! qu'on ne m'en parle plus ("Fie on life! Speak no more of it to me").

She was buried in the Saint-Laon church in Thouars, in the Deux-Sèvres department of France.

Five and a half years after her death, her husband married Charlotte of Savoy, by whom he had three surviving children: Charles VIII of France, and two daughters, Anne of France and Jeanne.

Margaret is also famous for the legend that she was kissed or almost kissed by poet Alain Chartier while asleep in her own rooms (another variant of this legend has Anne of Brittany as its protagonist), though her age and location at the time of Chartier's death would have made that impossible.1

  • Biography*: Louis XI (3 July 1423 – 30 August 1483), called the Prudent (French: le Prudent), was a monarch of the House of Valois who ruled as King of France from 1461 to 1483. He succeeded his father Charles VII.

A devious and disobedient Dauphin of France, Louis entered into open rebellion against his father in a short-lived revolt known as the Praguerie (1440). The king forgave his rebellious vassals, including his son Louis, to whom he entrusted the management of the Dauphiné.

Louis' ceaseless intrigues, however, led his father to banish him from court. From the Dauphiné, he led his own political establishment and married Charlotte of Savoy, daughter of Louis, Duke of Savoy, against the will of his father. Charles VII sent an army to compel his son to his will, but Louis fled to Burgundy, where he was hosted by Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy, Charles' greatest enemy.

When Charles VII died in 1461, Louis left the Burgundian court to take possession of his kingdom. His taste for intrigue and his intense diplomatic activity earned him the nicknames the Cunning (Middle French: le rusé) and the Universal Spider (Middle French: l'universelle aragne), as his enemies accused him of spinning webs of plots and conspiracies.

In 1472, the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, took up arms against his rival Louis, who was able to isolate the Duke from his English allies by signing the Treaty of Picquigny (1475) with Edward IV of England. The treaty formally ended the Hundred Years' War. With the death of Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, the dynasty of the dukes of Burgundy died out. Louis took advantage of the situation to seize numerous Burgundian territories, including Burgundy proper and Picardy.

Without direct foreign threats, Louis was able to eliminate his rebellious vassals, expand royal power, and strengthen the economic development of his country. He died in 1483 and was succeeded by his son Charles VIII.3

  • Marriage*: He married Matilda (?) of Strathern, daughter of Robert (?) 4th Earl of Strathearn, circa 1280 in Scotland.1
  • Death*: Alexander Stewart Earl of Menteith died before 1306 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: Life
Alexander was the eldest son and heir of Walter Bailloch Stewart and Mary I, Countess of Menteith and was the Mormaer or Earl of Menteith succeeding his mother the de jure countess. The first mention of him in records is with his brother John de Menteith in a compact dated on 20 September 1286, at Turnberry, Carrick, between Bruce and the Stewarts. In another writ, of uncertain date, granted by their father to Kilwinning Abbey, he and his brother are styled Alexander and John de Menteith. Alexander joined with his father in a charter granting the church of Kippen to the Cambuskenneth Abbey situated within the earldom as a place of burial; the writ being dated 1286. Prior to succeeding his father, Alexander was at Norham in 1291, and was among those who swore fealty to Edward I. Alexander was with his father at the Battle of Dunbar on 27 April 1296, and fled to Dunbar Castle where he and others were taken prisoner and committed to the Tower. His detention was not long, however, and he was liberated after promising to serve the English King, meeting with him at Elgin 27 July 1296.[2] He repeated this promise, and swore fealty at Berwick a month later, on 28 August, as Alexander Comes Meneteth. Alexander then gave over two of his sons, Alan and Peter, as hostages. Alexander seems to have retired from public life after this, tending only to his family affairs. He died before 1306.

    Family
He married a lady named Matilda (Maud), a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, and together they had the following children:
Alan, Earl of Menteith, who succeeded his father as Earl.
Peter, who in 1296 was a hostage in England with his brother Alan. He accompanied King Edward to Flanders, and took part in the French campaign of 1297, where he may have been killed.
Murdach, who became Earl of Menteith.
Alexander, styled as brother of Murdach in a charter to Gilbert Drummond.
Malise, who had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Ballygillachy.
Margaret de Menteith, wife of Alexander de Abernethy.
Ellen, recently identified as the wife of William Ferrers, 1st Baron Ferrers of Groby (d. 20 March 1324/5.)1

  • Birth*: Sir William de Keith of Humbie was born circa 1236 in Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland.1,2
  • Marriage*: He married Barbara de Seaton, daughter of Adam de Seaton and Janet Giffard of Yester, circa 1260 in Scotland.5,2
  • Death*: Sir William de Keith of Humbie died circa 1293 in Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland.5,2
  • Biography*: Sir William de Keith witnessed in 1270 a charter of confirmation of a donation to the monastery of Paisley. He is here designed simply 'dom Willielmus Keth, miles,' and it seems doubtful whether he ever held the office of Marischal. The author of 'Caledonia' states that William succeeded as heir to his father John, but that the former 'appears not in history and little in the charters.' He died before 1293.

He is said to have married Barbara, a daughter of Adam de Seton, ancestor of the Earls of Winton, called also daughter of Adam, Lord of Seton. [The Scots Peerage VI:29-30]2

Sir John Menteith Lord of Arran1

  • Birth*: Sir John Menteith Lord of Arran was born circa 1280 in Scotland.1
  • Marriage*: He married Helen (?) of Mar, daughter of Gartnait (?) 7th Earl of Mar and Lady Christina Bruce, circa 1300 in Scotland.3
  • Biography*: He held the office of Sheriff of Dunbartonshire in 1304. He captured Sir William Wallace, and took him in chains to London. He joined Robert the Bruce and fought in the War of Scottish Inpendence. He lived at Rusky, Scotland. He was Guardian of the Earldom of Menteith in 1320.

    Life
He was born to Mary, Countess of Menteith and her husband Walter "Bailloch" Stewart, Earl of Menteith jure uxoris. He and his older brother, Alexander, Earl of Menteith, used the name of the earldom as their surname de Menteith. John possessed the land of Ruskie, Stirlingshire.

He was Governor of Dumbarton Castle, an appointment made by Edward I who was keen to secure the fortification as a major access route into Scotland by sea. Tradition has it that Menteith betrayed Sir William Wallace to English soldiers, which led to Wallace's capture and torturous execution and his later nickname Fause Menteith ("Menteith the treacherous, false").

Wyntoun, whose "Metrical Chronicle" was written in 1418, says:
"Schyre Jhon of Menteith in tha days
    Tuk in Glasgow William Walays;
And sent hym until Ingland sune,
There was he quartayrd and undone."

The English chronicler Piers Langtoft states that Menteith discovered the retreat of Wallace through the treacherous information of Jack Short, his servant, and that he came under cover of night and seized him in bed. A passage in the Scala Chronica, quoted by John Leland, notes, "William Walleys was taken of the Counte of Menteith, about Glasgow, and sent to King Edward, and after was hanged, drawn, and quartered at London."

    Issue
Menteith, by an unknown spouse, had issue:
Sir John de Menteith the younger, married Helen daughter of Gartnait, Earl of Mar
    Walter Menteith
Johanna Menteith, married Maol Íosa IV, Earl of Strathearn, John Campbell, Earl of Atholl, Maurice de Moravia, Earl of Strathearn, William de Moravia, 5th Earl of Sutherland.2,4

  • Birth*: Gartnait (?) 7th Earl of Mar was born circa 1270 in Mar, Scotland.1
  • Marriage*: He married Lady Christina Bruce, daughter of Robert de Brus Le vieil, First Lord of Brus and Margaret (?) Countess of Carrick, circa 1292 in Scotland.1
  • Death*: Gartnait (?) 7th Earl of Mar died before September 1305 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: Gartnait of Mar, also known as Gartnait mac Domhnaill (Gartnait, Donald's son), was the eighth known Mormaer of Mar, ruling from somewhere around 1301, perhaps as early as 1297, until his death in 1305. He was a son of Domhnall I of Mar, brother of Isabella of Mar and brother-in-law of Robert I of Scotland.

The last recorded instance of his father occurs in 1297, and there are possible records of his son Gartnait as Mormaer in 1302, and definite records in 1305. Gartnait himself is known to have collaborated with Edward I of England in some form during the crackdown of 1297, but this does not necessarily mean any break with his father or with Robert I, whom his father supported.

In 1302, a document containing terms of reconciliation between Edward I of England and Robert stipulates that Robert should act as the warden of Gartnait,1 implying that Gartnait's father Domhnall had just died.2
