  • Birth*: Ealdred II (?) Earl of Bamburgh was born circa 1000 in England*.1,2
  • Death*: He died in 1038 in England*.1,2
  • Biography*: Ealdred, son of Uhtred by Ecgfrida daughter of Bishop Ealdun, succeeded to the earldom of the Northumbrians alone and killed Thurbrand, his father's murderer. Carl, the son of Thurbrand, and Earl Ealdred were distressed by these shocking events. He and Ealdred tried to ambush each other at every opportunity but were finally brought to agreement by the intervention of friends. Indeed, they became so friendly that they decided to go to Rome together as sworn brothers. But held up by a lengthy storm at sea they abandoned the proposed journey and returned home. Carl received the earl into his home with befitting magnificence. But after this show of conviviality, while he (Carl) was escorting him - suspecting no evil - apparently to show him honour, he killed him in a wood called Risewood and still today the place of his murder is marked by a small stone cross.

Earl Ealdred had five daughters. of whom three were called Aelfflaed. the fourth Ealdgyth. and the fifth Aetheldryth. From one of these Aelfflaeds, Earl Siward fathered Earl Waltheof and because this Aelfflaed was a countess, since she was the daughter of Earl Ealdred who was the son of Earl Uhtred and the daughter of Bishop Ealdun, she claimed the aforesaid lands as hers by hereditary right - Barmpton. Skirningham. Elton, Carlton. School Aycliffe, and Monk Heselden which Earl Siward, her husband, gave her; and he gave to his son the earldom of the Northumbrians, just as Waltheof' s grandfather, Earl Ealdred, had held it.

After the death of Earl Siward and Countess Aelfflaed, war erupted and these lands were devastated. A long time after, Arkil son of Eegfrith, who was mentioned earlier and who had married Sigrid daughter of Kilvert and Ecgfrida, daughter of Bishop Ealdun, seized these devastated lands for himself and settled down on them. When his wife Sigrid died, he gave to St Cuthbert, Monk Heselden, School Aycliffe, and Carlton which the church still possesses. Arkil, son of Fridegist, Earl Eadulf, and Arkil, son of Ecgfrith all had Sigrid as a wife. Afterwards, King William came to England and Arkil fled into exile. And so that land lay waste once more. Later, a thegn from Yorkshire, called Orm, son of Camel, married Actheldryth, one of the five daughters of Earl Ealdred, and they had a daughter called Ecgfrida, who by Aelfsige of Tees had a son, Waltheof, two other sons, and a daughter, Eda. Because Ecgfrida was descended from Ealdred and the daughter of Bishop Ealdun. she claimed hereditary right and with her husband, Aelfsige, seized Barmpton and Skirningham.'

  • Birth*: James Douglas of Morton, 1st Earl of Morton was born in 1426 in Morton, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.1,2,4
  • Marriage*: He married Joan Stewart Princess of Scotland, daughter of James I Stewart King of Scots and Lady Joan Beaufort, on 14 May 1459 in Scotland.1,2,4
  • Death*: James Douglas of Morton, 1st Earl of Morton died on 22 October 1493 in Midlothian, Scotland.1,2,4
  • Burial*: He was buried after 22 October 1493 in Saint Nicholas BuccleuchChurchyard, Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland.4
  • Biography*: James Douglas, (1426 - 22 October 1493), the 4th Lord of Dalkeith, was created the 1st Earl of Morton in 1458.

    Life
He was the son of James Douglas, 2nd Lord of Dalkeith and Elizabeth Gifford, daughter of James Gifford of Sheriffhall. His father resigned all his estates to James in 1456 when James became the 4th Lord of Dalkeith. James was created Earl of Morton in 1458 upon his marriage to Joan Stewart (1428-1493), the daughter of James I, King of Scots. She was a deaf-mute.

The Earl entered into a marriage contract with Patrick Graham, Bishop of St. Andrews between the Bishop's niece and John Douglas, the Earl's eldest son and heir. In turn the Grahams, the Bishop, his brother and nephew, allied themselves to the Earl and pledged to assist him in recovering the diverted lands of Whittingehame and Morton. It appears, however, that this pledge was intended to draw the Earl of Morton into a conspiracy that included the Bishop, Lord Boyd and his party. Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd who, as one of the Regents during the minority of James III of Scotland, took possession of the young king and married his son to the king's elder sister, for which crimes he was later attainted for high treason. The Earl of Morton apparently did not participate since he sat on the jury which convicted the Boyds. Bishop Graham was later excommunicated and deposed.

The lands of Whittinghame and all rights over the barony of Morton, Dumfriesshire were resigned into the Earl's hands in 1473-4 and in that same year he recovered the lordship of Dalkeith increasing the Earls already vast estates. He re-endowed the collegiate church at Dalkeith his 3rd great-grandfather founded and he also founded St. Martha's Hospital in Aberdour in 1474. The Earl died on 22 October 1493 when his son John succeeded him as the 2nd Earl of Morton. His wife Joan predeceased him by 4 months dying on 22 June 1493.

    The Morton Monument
The Earl and Countess of Morton were buried together in the choir of the parish church of St. Nicholas Buccleuch, known as the Dalkeith Collegiate Church, in Dalkeith, south of Fife and east of Edinburgh, in Midlothian, Scotland. Known as the Morton Monument, their tombs are covered with their stone effigies, complete with their armorial bearings. The choir is now in the ruins, leaving the tombs out in the open, where, in a few centuries, the elements have erased their faces. Their hands, pressed together in prayer, were likely to have been destroyed during the Reformation. Today, as one of the visitors remarked, "[o]nce crisply carved and detailed with heraldic devices", the tombs have "the look of sand sculptures after the tide has washed in and retreated". Due to their historical value, in 2005 a team of volunteers and preservationists created a protective canopy over their effigies.

    Family
He and his wife Joan were the parents of:

Sir John Douglas, 2nd Earl of Morton.
James, appeared in several writs 1466-1480.
Janet, married bef. 1 February 1490-1 to Sir Patrick Hepburn, 1st Earl of Bothwell.
Elizabeth, she was mentioned in a charter of 1479.2

  • Burial*: Joan Stewart Princess of Scotland was buried.
  • Birth*: She was born in 1428 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.1
  • Marriage*: She married James Douglas of Morton, 1st Earl of Morton, son of James Douglas 2nd Lord Dalkeith and Elizabeth Gifford, on 14 May 1459 in Scotland.1,4,5
  • Married Name: As of 14 May 1459,her married name was Douglas.1,4,5
  • Death*: Joan Stewart Princess of Scotland died on 22 June 1493 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: Joan Stewart, Countess of Morton, also called Joanna (c. 1428–aft. 16 October 1486), was the daughter of James I, King of Scotland, and the wife of James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton. She was known, in Latin, as the muta domina [mute lady] of Dalkeith.

    Life
Born in Scotland c.?1428, she was the third daughter of James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort. Joan had two older brothers, including the future King of Scotland, James II, and five sisters. She had “the misfortune to be deaf and dumb”, and was known as muta domina or “the mute lady”. Joan was reported to have used sign language to communicate, even in public (although it was considered at that time to be impolite).

Joan was originally contracted to marry James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Angus on 18 October 1440, but he died (without issue) in 1446 before the marriage could take place. In 1445 she was sent to France and did not return home to Scotland until 1457. She had been promised in marriage to the Dauphin of France but the marriage did not take place, probably due to her inability to articulate. Joan married James Douglas, 4th Baron Dalkeith before 15 May 1459, who at the time of their marriage was raised to the peerage as the first Earl of Morton. They were granted a dispensation on 7 January 1463-4 for being consanguineous in the second and third degrees. Joan and her husband James were both aware of their close relationships but were persuaded to marry by her brother King James II of Scotland and applied for the dispensation to legitimize their marriage. The Countess Joanna died in 1493, predeceasing her husband, James, by several months.

This is believed to be the world’s oldest image of a known deaf person. The choir is now in the ruins, leaving the tombs out in the open, where, in a few centuries, the elements have erased their faces. Their hands, pressed together in prayer, were likely to have been destroyed during the Reformation. Today, as one of the visitors remarked, “[o]nce crisply carved and detailed with heraldic devices”, the tombs have “the look of sand sculptures after the tide has washed in and retreated”.
