When the 1860 census was taken, she and her husband Alfred were living with her parents in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio. It thus seems likely that the land they had purchased from her parents earlier in the year was their family farm, and that she and Alfred had taken it over.2 She and Alfred had two known children, Arthur E. (b 1858, d 4 May 1861) and Leland (d 29 June 1863).2

She and her husband Ira were living in Parkman Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, in 1840.6 They moved to Cayuga Co., New York, by 1848, where their daughter Medora Helen was born on 6 January.7 In 1850 they were living in Arkwright, Chautauqua Co., New York. Living with them were J. Norton (age 20, born in New York) and Stillman Norton (22, born in Massachusetts).8 They were living in Avon Twp., Lake Co., Illinois, in 1860, about 15 miles from Palatine, Cook Co., Illinois, where Lucina's parents, and her sister Matilda's family, were then living.3,9,10 They moved to Wabasha, Wabasha Co., Minnesota, in 186711, where they lived the rest of their lives.11,12,13,14,15,16
Her husband Ira Buck's obituary says he had five daughters and one son, but census entries suggest she and Ira had six daughters and one son: Amelia (b abt 1840), James S. (b abt 1841), Elmina (b abt 1846, possibly d bef 1860), Medora Helen (b 6 January 1848, d 27 March 1874), Sarah (b abt 1852), Emma S. (b abt 1854), Francis (b abt 1859).11,17,3,12,18

- [S3154] 1850 U.S. Census, J. D. Rutt household, Chautauqua Co., New York. This census entry appears to list the head of the household as "J. D. Rutt" (age 35, born in New York, carpenter and joiner). The identification of this as the family of Ira D. Buck is based on the similarity between these entries and other census entries, along with Ira's daughter Medora's death record, and his wife's maiden name. The others listed in 1850 are Lucinda (33, New York), Amelia (11, New York), James (9, Ohio), Elmina (4, New York), and Medora (1, New York), along with J. Norton and Stillman Norton. Except for Elmina, who is not listed in 1860, these names, ages, and birth places are generally consistent with those listed in Ira Buck's household in 1860, which lists I. D. Buck (45, New York), Luanda (42, New York), A. M. (20, New York), James S. (18, Ohio), and Helln M. (12, New York), along with the younger children Sarah, E. S., and Francis. In the 1870 and 1880 censuses Ira's occupation is listed as carpenter. Ira's daughter Medora's death record lists her name as Madere Helen (Buck), indicating that Medora Buck in 1850 and Helln M. Buck in 1860 are the same person. In addition, Ira's wife was Lucina Norton, and two Norton men were living with the "J. D. Rutt" family in 1850. And finally, the following family in the census is that of J. Tinker, who has been identified as the husband of Lucina's deceased sister Lucinda. Taken together all this indicates strongly that this is Ira D. Buck and his family.

In 1850 he was living in the household of James Moffat, near his parents in Parkman Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio. Also in that household was Stephen Norton, age 20.6 For a time after his marriage, probably from at least 1850 to 1854 based on the birth locations of their children Annette and Lauren, he and his wife Elvira lived in Ohio.3 They were living in Illinois when their daughter Rosa was born about 1856.3 They soon moved back to Ohio, and lived in Burton, Geauga Co., probably from at least 1870 to 1880. In 1880 their daughter Annette, age 28, was still living with them at home.3,7 William was working during that time as a farm laborer.3,7
His will was dated 20 September 1889 in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio, with E. S. Mills and Lissa S. Mills as witnesses. He left all of his estate to his wife Elvira and daughter Nettie, who was then living with them. At their deaths (if his daughter were to die without issue), the real estate was to go to his son E. J. Norton. If E. J. were to die without issue before his (William's) wife and daughter, the real estate was to be divided equally among his remaining children. His son E. J. was named executor.8
Debts owed by the estate totaled about $600 (most of which was for the support of his widow Elvira for one year), necessitating the sale of the real estate, about 1/2 acre. It was appraised at $450 on 22 September 1894, and at $400 on 3 November 1894, and sold on 30 March 1895 to Henry F. Johnson for $450.9,8 The estate was settled on 27 June 1895, with $434.35 going to his widow Elvira after all debts and expenses were paid.8
He and Elvira had nine children, with seven living in 1900, but names are only known for seven of the nine: Annette (b November 1852), Lauren H. (b abt 1854), Rosa (b abt 1856), Adella (b abt 1860), Charles W. (b abt 1862), Ermon J. (b abt 1864), Harriett Genelle (b December 1866).3,7,10,11,9

In 1850, before her marriage, she was living with her parents in Parkman Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio.2 She and her husband John were living in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio, in 1860.6 In 1870, after her husband John returned home from the war, they were again living in Burton.7 By 1880 they had moved to Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.8
Her will was dated 26 September 1896, with Jane R. Brown and Addie Leach as witnesses. Although her husband John Bartholomew was still alive, living in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, at a National Home for Disabled Soldiers, she left all of her estate to her brother James H. Norton.5,9 The application to probate her will was submitted to the court in Geauga Co., Ohio, by her brother James on 20 December 1898, twenty months after her death.5
She and John had no known children.6,7,8

The Charles A. Towne manuscript erroneously lists his given name as Stillman W.2 He moved with his parents to Geauga Co., Ohio, sometime between 1835, when his sister Martha was buried in Onondaga Co., New York, and 1840, when his father Lauren's household was listed in Geauga Co. in the census.8,9,4 He moved back to New York in 18484, then returned to Ohio in 1850.4 In 1852 he moved to Minnesota4, where he worked on a farm in Hennepin Co. until 1859.4
He and his wife Sallie moved to Illinois soon after their marriage in 1858, based on the birth date and location of their son Edward10, and are listed in Montezuma Twp., Pike Co., Illinois, in the 1860 census.10
He enlisted for service in the Civil War on 13 July 1861 at Pittsfield (or possibly Milton), Pike Co., Illinois, as a Private in Co. K of the 2nd. Illinois Cavalry Regiment. The regiment was mustered in at Camp Butler near Springfield, Illinois, on 12 August, and traveled to Cairo, Illinois, arriving in early October after brief stays at Carbondale, Du Quoin and Fort Massac. Company K participated in the Battle of Belmont in Missouri on 7 November, and in operations against Island No. 10 at the Kentucky Bend in the Mississippi River from 28 February to 8 April 1862. They were then involved in various expeditions and skirmishes in Tennessee, ending up in La Grange, Tennessee, in November 1862, where he was discharged for disability on 26 November.11,6,12,13,14
After his discharge he traveled by train back to Illinois, and spent the winter of 1862/63 recuperating with his sister Matilda and her family in Palatine, Cook Co., Illinois,1 then joined his wife Sallie in Hennepin Co., Minnesota, where she was living with her parents.1
He reenlisted on 16 August 1864 in Stewart, Minnesota, as a Private in Co. F of the 11th. Minnesota Infantry Regiment, organized at Fort Snelling in Hennepin Co. The regiment traveled from there to Nashville, Tennessee, with stops in Chicago, Illimois, and St. Louis, Missouri. Headquartered in Gallatin, Tennessee, they were assigned to guard the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line from Nashville to the Kentucky border, with Co. F on duty "at the tunnel." It was "somewhat wearisome work ... spiced by an occasional chase after guerrillas." On 12 March 1865 two men were killed during the capture of a herd of 1500 cattle that had been taken by guerrillas. In early summer the guerrilla forces surrendered, and on 26 June, after the war had ended, the regiment was officially mustered out and headed home to Minnesota. They were discharged at St. Paul, Minnesota, on 11 July 1865.11,6,15,16,17
He returned to Hennepin Co., and is listed there in 1865 with his wife Sallie and their children in the Minnesota state census.18 They moved to St. George Twp., Benton Co., Minnesota, that same year4, and are listed there in the 187019 and 1880 censuses.20 His parents Lauren and Maria Norton were living with them in 1865, but moved back to Ohio by 1870.18,21
He and Sallie moved to Niobrara, Knox Co., Nebraska, sometime between 1880 and 188522, and are listed there in the 1885 Nebraska state census.22 Harvey is also listed there in the special 1890 veteran's schedule.11
On 26 January 1899 he was admitted to the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Grand Island, Hall Co., Nebraska. His disability qualifying him for admittance was listed as "General debility."23 Although he is listed there in the 1900 census, his wife Sallie was still living in Niobrara, along with their divorced daughter Laura and two of her children, and their widowed daughter Bertha and two of her children.24,25 Sallie soon joined him, however, as they were both living at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in 1902.26 He moved into the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Western Branch, in Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, on 30 May 1903, while Sallie continued to live at the Home in Nebraska. His disability was then described as rheumatism and a hernia.6,27
He and Sallie had the following known children: Edward (b abt 1859), Laura M. (b February 1862), Bertha F. (b December 1865), Martha A. (b abt 1867, probably d bef 1880), and Eugene William (b abt 1869), plus one other whose name is unknown who died before 1900.19,20,25

In 1860 he and his wife Caroline were living in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.9
He served during the Civil War as a Private in Co. E of the 105th. Ohio Infantry Regiment, enlisting on 1 August 1862.10,11 The regiment was mustered in at Camp Cleveland on 20 August, and left for Kentucky the next day. On 1 October they left Louisville to pursue Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg, culminating in the Battle of Perryville on 8 October, during which they suffered heavy casualties. After a few marches in Kentucky, they moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in January 1863, and were at the Batlle of Vaught's Hill on 20 March 1863.
They next joined the Tullahoma Campaign, during which they fought at Hoover's Gap from 24-26 June, a Union victory. They fought again at the Battle of Chickamauga, a Union defeat, where they again suffered heavy casualties. In October and November 1863 they were part of the Chattanooga Campaign, fighting at the Battles of Orchard Knob and Missionary Ridge, suffering only light casualties.
In the summer of 1864 the regiment was part of the Atlanta Campaign, participating in the Battles of Resaca from 13-15 May, Kennesaw Mountain on 27 June, Peachtree Creek on 20 July, Utoy Creek from 5-7 August, and Jonesborough from 31 August to 1 September. During this campaign they were not immediately involved in the heaviest engagements, but nevertheless suffered significant casualties. They then joined Sherman's March to the Sea from 15 November to 10 December 1864, followed by the Carolinas Campaign from January to April 1865.12,13
On 15 March 1865 he transferred to the 155th Co., 2nd Battalion, of the Veteran Reserve Corps, and was mustered out on 30 June at Nashville, Tennessee.11
After the war he and Caroline lived in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio, where they are listed with their children in the 1870 and 1880 censuses14,15, and where James is listed in the special 1890 veteran's schedule.10 In 1880 their daughter Sylvia and her husband James Crass were living with them.15 During this time he was working as a farm laborer.14,15
In 1900, after his wife's death, he was living in Burton as a boarder in the household of Ann Nye5 and working as a mail carrier.5 In 1910 he was living with his daughter Sylvia's family in Porterfield Twp., Marinette Co., Wisconsin.16
On 26 January 1901 he petitioned the court in Chardon, Geauga Co., Ohio, to formally adopt George P. Terwilliger (age 10) and Clara M. Terwilliger (age 8), children of his deceased daughter Minnie (Norton) (Terwilliger) Watring, and to legally change their surname to Norton. Their father George had abandoned them eight years previously. The petition was approved that same day.17
He and Caroline had the following known children: Sylvia A. (b abt 1854), Eugene (b abt 1859, probably d bef 1870), Ella N. (b abt 1861), Minnie M. (b abt 1867, d bef 1901), Prudy M. (b abt 1876).9,14,15,17

He and his brother-in-law Ira Buck served during the Civil War as privates in Co. E of the 113th Illinois Infantry, both enlisting on 11 August 1862.6 The regiment was mustered into service on 1 October 1862, and left Camp Hancock near Chicago for Memphis, Tennessee, on 6 November. They were part of the Vicksburg Campaign, and participated in the Battles of Chickasaw Bayou from 26-29 December, a Union defeat, and Arkansas Post from 9-11 January 1863, a Union victory, although the regiment suffered heavy losses. From 17-22 January they moved to Young's Point, Louisiana, where they were on duty until March.
They then traveled to Mississippi as part of the Vicksburg Campaign, participating in the Battles of Jackson, Mississippi, on 14 May, and Champion Hill on 16 May, both Union victories. They arrived at Vicksburg the evening of 18 May, and were part of two major assaults against the city, on 19 May and 22 May, both times being repelled with heavy casualties. They were also part of the Siege of Jackson from 10-17 May.
For the remainder of the war they primarily performed guard duty, and were in Corinth, Mississippi, until January 1864.7,8 At some point during this time Orange Norton contracted smallpox. He was apparently sent back to Illinois, and died in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, on 7 January 1864.3

On 14 February 1860 Alfred Clark Town bought 59 acres of land from his wife's parents Clark Town and Electa Churchill for $1770.2 Later, when the 1860 census was taken, he and Diana were living with her parents in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio. It thus seems likely that the land they had purchased from her parents earlier in the year was their family farm, and that he and Diana had taken it over.2
On 16 May 1878 he bought a 41.1-acre parcel of land in Parkman Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, by Sheriff's Deed for $1335.75, from the heirs of Israel B. Pitkin. Israel Pitkin was the husband of Alfred's first wife Diana's sister Anna.2 On 7 August 1888 Alfred and his second wife Sarah sold this same land to Mrs. M. E. Gillen for $1200.2 Six days later, on 13 August 1888, he bought a one-acre lot on Mill St. in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio, from P. T. Thompson for $200.2
He and his first wife Diana had two known children, Arthur E. (b 1858, d 4 May 1861) and Leland (d 29 June 1863).2 He and his second wife Sarah had the following known children: Leroy A. (b 18 August 1865, d 1927), Perry A. (b 3 April 1868, d 18 March 1913), Frank (b abt 1869, d 1 January 1896), Clayton A. (b 23 April 1871, d 1871).2
