He was a trader and ship builder in Newburyport, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2 He bought land in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, on 29 December 1785.3
On 29 September 1788 his widow Sarah was appointed administrator of his estate. The inventory filed the same day included half of a schooner, five rods of land on Pleasant Street, part of a house, barn and six rods of land, rights to graze one cow in the Common Pasture, and a pew in the Presbyterian Meeting House.4 On 3 August 1808 his widow, by then remarried, received her dower rights to his estate.5 And on 9 September 1808 his children William, Elizabeth, and Benjamin received their share of his personal estate.6
He and Sarah had the following known children: Amos (b 1 March 1780, d June 1802), William (b 12 June 1781), Elizabeth (b 5 August 1785, d 3 May 1826), Benjamin (b 12 March 1788, d 21 July 1830).2

With his brother Andrew, he served in the militia under Capt. Thomas Noyes, in response to an Indian attack on Haverhill on 29 August 1708.4
On 3 July 1700 he sold 30 acres of land in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, to Edw. Thompson for £28.5 On 27 December 1710 he bought a messuage (land with a house and other buildings) in Newbury totaling six acres, from Anthony Morse for £60 10s.6 On 3 April 1715 he sold two acres of this land to Penuel Titcomb.7
He granted seven acres of upland in Newbury to his son John on 5 January 1721/22, "in consideration of love, goodwill and affection, which I have and do bear towards [him]."8
On 27 January 1724/25 he sold 1/4 acre of upland in Newbury to John Titcomb for £6 10s.9 He sold him two more acres of upland in Newbury on 20 April 1727.9
His will was dated 13 May 1727 and proved on 22 August 1727. His wife was to have use of his house, lands, and meadow until his son Amos reached age 21, when he was to receive half. His wife was also to have all of his personal estate. His son John was left £5, in addition to what he had already received. His son Joseph was left one acre north of the pine swamp, an additional lot, a salt marsh, and £40. His son Moses was left another tract of land. The remainder of his estate was left to his son Amos, who was to pay £5 to his son John, £30 to son Joseph, £40 to son Moses, £3 to daughter Mary, £3 to daughter sarah, £10 to daughter Prudence, and £30 to daughter Ednar at age 18. He was also to supply his mother Mary with four cords of wood per year.10
His estate was inventoried 18 September 1727, and consisted of real estate worth £1388 and personal property worth £223 6s., a large estate for the time.2

On 12 June 1736, "in consideration of ye Natural Affection" for her son Amos and daughter Ednah, she gave Amos the livestock she had received in her husband's will, plus a feather bed, and all debts due her, in return for Amos paying all her debts and funeral expenses. She gave Ednah all her household goods and clothing.2

He was a mariner and coaster, trading with towns along the coast.2
On 21 January 1720/21 he bought River Lot No. 193 in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, including a house, from William Moulton for £110.3 On 2 June 1721 he bought 38 feet of land bordering his original lot purchase in Newbury from Stephen Greenleaf, Jr., for £9 10s.4 He received a gift of seven acres of upland in Newbury from his father on 5 January 1721/22, with possession to transfer at his father's death.5 On 12 December 1724 he bought 13 acres of upland in Newbury from Benj. Sweet for £305.6 On 24 February 1727/28 he sold the 8th. lot in the division of land west of the Little River to Stephen Noyes for £103.7 On 25 October 1728 he bought two acres of land in Newbury from Edward Poor for £60.8
His wife Abigail was appointed administrator of his estate on 19 February 1732 (presumably this was actually 1732/33, after his death). The inventory included his house, 1/4 acre lot, and barn, worth £290, 15 1/2 acres of other land worth £380, and half of a sloop with its gear worth £240.9 On 20 October 1735 his widow Abigail received 1/3 of his estate, and on 14 April 1744 the remainder was divided into four equal shares, and transferred to his three sons, with his oldest son Caleb receiving a double share.10
