He served during the French and Indian War, and in March 1756 was appointed as a 2d. Lieutenant in the 4th. Company, 3rd. Regiment, led by Col. Nathan Whiting. On either 15 or 25 June 1756 (accounts differ) he was leading a scouting party sent out from Halfmoon (in eastern New York, about 10 miles north of Albany) toward Hoosuc (the author assumes this was West Hoosac, now Williamstown, Massachusetts, where there was a garrison). They were attacked by Indians about 12 miles "westward from Hoosuc." Several of the scouting party were killed, and four or five were captured. Three of the prisoners returned to Connecticut in the fall of 1757, and from them the details were learned. Their reports don't name Solomon Grant specifically, but he was likely one of those killed.3
In his will, dated 8 September 1755, he noted that he was "about going in the expedition to Canada." He donated £200 to the Second Society in Coventry, Connecticut, to be used by the school. He left all of his real estate to his brother Noah, and all of his personal property, after payment of debts, expenses, and other bequests, to his brother Adoniram. He left £100 to his sister Martha Price, and smaller amounts to five others. The inventory of his estate was filed on 16 March 1757, and came to about £900.4,2

He and his first wife Mary lived in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, from 1772 to 1775.1 They moved to New Lebanon, Albany Co. (now Columbia Co.), New York, sometime between 1775 and 1777.1
During the Revolution he served as Quartermaster of the 17th. Regiment of New York Militia, and as 2nd. Lieutenant of the 5th. Company, 2nd. Regiment, New York Line.1 He served on a committee to formulate a protest against part of the new state constitution. In 1778 he was on the committee of safety, and in 1792 was on the committee of correspondence. He was also Justice of the Peace for many years, and served as tax collector, assessor, poormaster, moderator, highway commissioner, fence viewer, and supervisor.1
He was one of the few people in town who did not become a member of the Shaker religious sect. At one point the founder of the sect, Ann Lee, appeared before him on a vagrancy charge. She told him that she would soon be holding meetings in his house. She later "bought the house through a third party, came dancing down the hill with her followers, took possession and held a meeting, and the next day demolished the house."1
