Relationship5th great-granduncle of Charles Edward Towne
Abiel Abbott was born on 14 June 1724 in East Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1 He married Tryphena Mills, daughter of Peter Mills and Ruth Loomis, about 1754 in East Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1 He died in 1783 (the Grant genealogy says 4 February 1762) in Wapping Parish, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1,2
After their marriage Abiel Abbott and his wife Tryphena probably lived on property he had purchased just south of his father's homestead in South Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1 He was administrator of his father's estate, and posted a bond of $300 on 7 February 1758. As the only son, he no doubt inherited the family homestead.3 They probably moved into his father's home after his death.1 He sold their previous home to Rev. Joseph Perry on 1 May 1760.1
Over the next ten years he had financial problems, losing the large inheritance from his father. In 1770, part of his land was taken by his uncle Capt. Ebenezer Grant for debts. On 6 June 1770, he sold the 170-acre family homestead for £500 to his brothers-in-law Stone and Roswell Mills, and William Pitkin. On 14 February 1772 he sold about 250 acres in Granville, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, that Tryphena had received from her father, for £90.1
After selling the family homestead in 1770 they probably moved to Podunk, Hartford Co., Connecticut, and may have lived with Tryphena's widowed mother, or on land Tryphena had received from her parents.1 In 1777 they sold this land to Samuel Bancroft for £42, and moved to Wapping Parish, Hartford Co., Connecticut, to land that they bought from Abner and Margaret Rockwell.1
He was a highway surveyor in 1759 and 1760, constable from 1762-1765, deputy sheriff in 1769 and later, and a grand juror in 1781 and 1782.1
He gave 18s, one of the largest contributions, to be used for blankets for soldiers in the Revolutionary War.1

She was the widow of his first cousin, Capt.      He was a g-grandson of the English emigrant Henry Wolcott, who was one of the first settlers of Windsor, Connecticut.1 William graduated in 1734 from Yale College in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut. He remained at Yale after graduating, holding the Berkeley scholarship, and teaching at Hopkins Grammar School. He was appointed as a tutor starting in September 1735, but became ill and probably quit after commencement in 1736.1 He was a Justice of the Peace, and a representative in the Connecticut General Assembly for many years. Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807), U.S. Senate Historical Office.
Oliver Ellsworth was born on 29 April 1745 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1 He married Abigail Wolcott, daughter of William Wolcott and Abigail Abbott, on 10 December 1772.1 He died on 26 November 1807 at age 62.1 He was buried at Windsor Cemetery in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
He was a g-grandson of Josias and Elizabeth (Holcomb) Ellsworth, the English emigrant.1 He was described as tall and erect, with large blue eyes and pleasant features. In public, he always wore black silk stockings, silver knee buckles, and a ruffled shirt. He was addicted to snuff, and tried to eliminate the habit, but was never completely successful.1
He studied under Rev. Dr. Bellamy, a local clergyman, for two years; graduated from Nassau Hall (now Princeton University) in 1766; studied theology for a year, then quit; studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1771. He was awarded honorary degrees from Princeton and Dartmouth in 1787, and from Yale in 1790.1
After their marriage, he and his wife Abigail lived on a farm in Wintonbury (now Bloomfield), Hartford Co., Connecticut, given to him by his father.1
He was appointed Connecticut state's attorney in 1775. During the Revolutionary War he was a Whig member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and a member of the state militia. In 1778 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress. He was a member of the Marine Committee, of the Board of Admiralty and of Appeals, and a member of the Governor's Council from 1780-1784. In 1784 he declined re-election to Congress. He also declined the position of commissioner of the treasury, serving instead as a judge of the Superior Court of Connecticut. He was a delegate to the federal Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in May 1787, and made important contributions in the writing of the Constitution. He was a member of the Senate in the First U.S. Congress in 1789, and was chairman of a committee to organize the U.S. Judiciary. He was active in the early financial affairs of the country. John Adams called him the "firmest pillar of Washington's administration." On 4 March 1796 he was appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1799 he was one of three U.S. ambassadors sent to France to settle differences between the two countries. While there he resigned as chief justice due to poor health, and retired to private life. In 1802, however, he was again a member of the Governor's Council in Connecticut, and was appointed chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court in 1807. He resigned within a year, however, again due to poor health.1 While in France, he was closely associated with Napoleon and Talleyrand. In the U.S., he was held in high esteem by many, including Washington and Lafayette, both of whom stayed at his house while traveling through Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
     He and Abigail had the following known children: Abigail (b 16 August 1774), Oliver (b 22 October 1776, d 20 May 1778), Oliver (b 27 April 1783, d 4 July 1805), Martin (b 17 April 1783, d 2 November 1857), William (b 25 June 1785, d 24 July 1785), Frances (b 31 August 1786, d 14 March 1868), Delia (b 23 July 1789, d 24 June 1840), twins William Wolcott (b 10 November 1791, d 15 January 1868) and Henry Leavitt (b 10 November 1791, d 27 December 1858).1

She was a g-granddaughter of Peter and Dorcas (Messenger) Mills. Peter was a son of Sir Peter Wouters Van der Meulin, of Amsterdam, Holland, who was knighted for his service in improving the dikes. The son Peter emigrated from Leyden, Holland, to New England about 1650. During the trip he joined the Puritans traveling with him, angering his father, who disowned him. He then changed his surname to Mills, since in Dutch Van der Meulin means "the man of the mill."1

Over the next ten years they had financial problems, losing the large inheritance from her husband's father. In 1770, part of their land was taken by her husband's uncle Capt. Ebenezer Grant for debts. On 6 Jun 1770, they sold the 170-acre family homestead for £500 to her brothers Stone and Roswell Mills, and William Pitkin. On 14 Feb 1772 they sold about 250 acres in Granville, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, that she had received from her father, for £90.1
In 1769, and at other times, she received land from her parents totaling over 750 acres in the towns of Granville, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, and Colebrook, Podunk, and Wapping Parish (now part of South Windsor), in Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
After selling the family homestead in 1770 she and her husband Abiel probably moved to Podunk, Hartford Co., Connecticut, and may have lived with her widowed mother, or on some of the land she had received from her parents.1 In 1777 they sold this land to Samuel Bancroft for £42, and moved to Wapping Parish, Hartford Co., Connecticut, to land that they bought from Abner and Margaret Rockwell.1
After her husband's death, Tryphena continued living in Wapping Parish until 23 September 1788, when she sold the property to Amaziah Rust for £200. She moved to a farm in North Coventry that she purchased from the same Amaziah Rust. This farm was near her daughter Aurelia's home in Quarryville. The farm was sold back to Amaziah Rust in 1797, and she most likely moved in with her daughter Aurelia.1
