Before 5 May 1742 he and his wife Anna were members of the First Congregational Church in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.1 On that date they joined the Elder Parks Presbyterian Church in Westerly, where he was a deacon.1 They joined the New Light religious sect about 1750, and at a meeting at his house on 5 April 1750, the "Church of Christ in Stonington and Westerly in Union" was organized and he was ordained its first pastor. His son Oliver became pastor after his death. A church building was built on a high hill near Dr. Joshua Babcock's house. It later became known as the Babcock Meetinghouse as its first four pastors were Babcocks. New Light churches spread throughout Rhode Island, Connecticut, and parts of Massachusetts.1

He was a farmer.2 He was elected town clerk in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island, when his father John Babcock resigned in 1732, and served until his death. He also was Justice of the Peace, and represented Westerly in the General Assembly in 1744.2
His will was dated 4 January 1750/51 in Westerly, and proved on 4 February 1750/51. He ordered that the western half of his farm be sold to pay his debts, and to fund his legacies. He left the rest of his estate to his wife Sarah, until his sons were grown. He left to his sons Joshua and Christopher, the rest of his homestead farm to be divided equally; to his sons Phineas and Samuel when they come of age, £100 each, to be paid by his sons Joshua and Christopher, respectively; to his son Elias, the land "given to me by my uncle James Babcock." He left other legacies to his daughters Sarah and Mercy. He also left a silver cane to James, Jonathan, and Anne Babcock, children of his uncle Capt. James Babcock. This is most likely the same silver cane he had been left in his uncle Capt. James Babcock's will.2
