He and his wife Abigail lived in Lancaster, Middlesex Co. (now Worcester Co.), Massachusetts.2 He was active in civil affairs in Lancaster, serving as tithingman in 1718, and between 1725 and 1743 he was moderator for six years, treasurer for one year, representative to the General Court for three years, and selectman for five years.2 He was also deacon of the First Church in Lancaster from 30 January 1729 until his death.2

On 19 February 1707/8 his parents deeded to him several tracts of land, totalling over 116 acres3, and on 18 December 1712 he and his parents exchanged land at Pond Meadow.3
He was a cooper and blacksmith2, and a Captain in the militia. In February 1724 he led an expedition with a Captain Lovell that ambushed and killed a party of ten Indians.2
His estate was valued at £1270 4d. His widow Eunice received property worth £661 5s 8d, his oldest son John received property worth £293 18s, and his remaining children Thomas, Nathaniel, Eunice, Betty, Dorothy, Lois, and Mary each received property worth £146 19s.2
On 23 December 1727 his widow petitioned the court for a grant of 150 acres of land in compensation for the loss of her husband in the government service, that she could then sell for the support of herself and her children. Instead, the court awarded her £100 on 28 December 1727.2

In February 1675/76, during King Philip's War, he was in charge of a garrison in Lancaster, Middlesex Co. (now Worcester Co.), Massachusetts, where people were staying for protection from the Indians. At sunrise on 10 February the garrison was attacked by Indians. He and several of the inhabitants were killed, including his sons John and Josiah, sister-in-law Elizabeth Kerley, and nephew Henry Kerley. Others were taken captive, including his wife Hannah and children Hannah and William, and his sister-in-law Mary Rowlandson and her three children.2
