He and his wife Sarah lived in Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.1
At around 6:00 AM on 21 April 1676, during King Philip's War, Indians attacked the Walter Haynes house, being used as a garrison on the west side of the Sudbury River (aka the Concord River), about halfway between the present towns of Sudbury and Wayland. Twelve men from Concord, Massachusetts, including James Hosmer, headed for the house, probably arriving early in that afternoon. Seeing only a small group of Indians in the meadow near the house, they rushed forward, only to be surprised by a larger group that had been in hiding. James and ten others from Concord were killed. A descendant, Rev. George W. Hosmer, writing several generations later, said that "My grandfather when resistance was in vain, plunged into the river to swim across and a bullet passed through his head."4
