On 10 February 1675/76, during King Philip's War, he was taken captive with his mother and sister Hannah when the garrison in Lancaster, Middlesex Co. (now Worcester Co.), Massachusetts, where they staying for protection was attacked by Indians. His father and brothers John and Josiah were killed. He was ransomed with his cousin Joseph Rowlandson at Portsmouth, sometime between 12 May and 11 July.3
He and his wife Ruth lived in Lancaster, Middlesex Co. (now Worcester Co.), Massachusetts,2 where he was active in civic affairs, serving on various committees.2 His estate was valued at £563 17s.2
He and Ruth had the following known children: John (b 1696), Hannah (b abt 1700, d 29 October 1789), Elizabeth (b 1701), Mary (b abt 1704, d 9 July 1782), Ruth (b 1706, d 28 May 1782), Submit (bapt 31 October 1708), William (bapt 24 April 1709), Josiah (bapt 27 May 1711), Ephraim (bapt 28 March 1714, d 7 April 1798), Manasseh (bapt 22 June 1716).4
