She came to the United States in 1881 or 1882.3,4
In 1900 she and her husband John were living in rented rooms at 2955 Lyman St. in Chicago.3 Soon afterwards they bought their own house at 2723 Bonfield St. in Chicago, where they lived from at least 1901 to 1910.5,4 They may have then lived next door for a time, at 2721 Bonfield St., as John was listed there in the 1914-15 Chicago City Directory.6 They moved again, by 1918, into a house they purchased at 4211 S. Francisco Ave. in Chicago, where they lived the rest of their married lives. Living with them in 1920 were Johanna's mother Marie Vehlow, and brothers William and August Vehlow.7,8,9 Johanna was still living there with her children Margaret, Alfred, Mildred, and John in 1930, after her husband's death. Living with them as a roomer was Charles Velow. He's listed in the census as married, and is probably a relative of Johanna, but how he is related is unknown.9
