- [S3346] Listed immediately below her in both passenger lists is Nelly Hanson, age 12, also from Eldsberga, Sweden, and also headed for Chicago. It seems probable that Mathilda and Nelly are related, but exactly how is unclear. It's possible she is Mathilda's sister Petrinella, who went by Nellie in the U.S., but she would have been 14, not 12. And other records indicate that Petrinella ("Pilla") immigrated to the U.S. with her sister Albertina in 1896.

She went by the nickname Bina.1,3
She and her sister Pilla emigrated together to the United States in 1896, first sailing from Gothenburg on 4 November on the ship Cameo, bound for Grimsby, England. After traveling overland to Liverpool, they boarded the SS Lucania, and arrived in New York on 14 November. In the Lucania's passenger list they are both listed with the occupation servant, with Chicago, Illinois, as their final destination, and for a "protracted sojourn."8,9 By 1920 she had become a naturalized citizen.10
In 1900 she was living and working as a servant in the household of Eli Hart at 3716 Lake Ave. in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.11
In 1910 she and her husband Albert were living on a rented farm in Monroe Prec., Hamilton Co., Nebraska.12,1 In March 1915 they moved to a farm in the eastern part of Scotts Bluff Co., Nebraska.13,4 In the spring of 1919 they sold the farm and moved to a house in the city of Scottsbluff, at 2008 Avenue A13, where they are listed in the 1920 census.10
Her husband Albert, a Scottsbluff policeman, was killed in the line of duty on 25 April 1923, and she filed a claim for compensation with both the city and county. The city fought the claim because he was outside the city limits of Scottsbluff when he was killed. In May 1924 the compensation commissioner approved the claim against the city, ruling that he was "within the course of his employment" to execute a legal arrest warrant outside the city limits. Her claim against the county, however, was denied because he was not a county employee. She was awarded $5250, the maximum allowed, to be paid in weekly installments of $15 dating from 25 April 1923, the date of her husband's death, plus $150 for funeral expenses.14
The city of Scottsbluff made several attempts to avoid paying the award. First, in June 1924 the city appealed the decision15, and in October 1924 the District Court in David City, Butler Co., Nebraska, sustained the award.16 They then appealed to the state Supreme Court, which again ruled in Bina's favor.17 And in January 1925 state representative Wilbur Barbour of Scottsbluff introduced House Resolution 223, for the state to pay the award.18 That resolution was soundly rejected.19 In March 1925 the Scottsbluff city council finally began paying the award, authorizing $1929.38 to cover the amount due to Bina since 25 April 1923, plus lawyer fees, and court costs, with the remainder of award to be paid monthly.17
She moved to Aurora, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, in June 19254, and is listed there at 810 10th. St. in the 1930 census.20
She and Albert had no children.1

She was known as the "angel of the family." She originally came from Sweden to the United States with her sister Amanda in 1896, but traveled back and forth at least two more times to help care for family members, including her parents in their old age.2
In 1896 she and Amanda left Eftra, Halland Co., on 1 May 1896, then sailed from Gothenburg for Hull, England, on the ship Aristo on 15 May. After traveling overland to Liverpool, they sailed on the SS Vancouver, and arrived in Quebec, Canada, on 31 May, with their final destination listed as Chicago, Illinois, in the passenger list.6,7,8 In 1900 she was living with her sister Ida and her family in Hammond, Lake Co., Indiana,3 and in April 1910, after Ida's death, she was living as a housekeeper with Ida's widowed husband John Larson and his children.9
She apparently went back to Sweden sometime between April and September 1910, since she returned from there to the U.S. in September 1910, and the passenger list says she'd been in the U.S. previously, from 1896 to 1910.10 She left Gothenburg for Hull, England, on the ship Calypso on 16 September, then sailed from Liverpool on the SS Caronia on 20 September, and arrived in New York on 28 September.11,10
She again went back to Sweden in 1916, perhaps to care for her elderly parents. (Her father died in 1919 at age 86, and her mother in 1921 at age 78.)12 She returned to the U.S. In 1922, after her mother's death, leaving Gothenburg on 7 September 1922 on the SS Drottningholm bound for New York, and arriving on 16 September. The passenger list says she intended to remain in the U.S. and become a citizen.13,14 She did eventually go back to Sweden, however, as she died there in 1944.5 Like her sisters Emma and Augusta, she suffered from stomach problems.2
She never married.2

She immigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1896, traveling with her sister Anna. They left Eftra, Halland Co., on 1 May, and sailed from Gothenburg on 15 May on the ship Ariosto bound for Hull, England. They traveled overland to Liverpool, and sailed from there on the SS Vancouver, arriving in Quebec, Canada, on 31 May. In the passenger list their final destination was listed as Chicago, Illinois.12,13,14 In the United States she used the surname Nelson.4 She became a naturalized citizen in 1904.7
After their marriage, she and her husband Nels lived in a rented house or apartment at 5922 Halsted St. in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Two lodgers were living with them, Gustaf Carlson and John Hellgren, and four other families were living at the same address.5,15 They moved to Indiana sometime between 1904 and 191015,6, when they were living in a rented house at 4116 Grapevine St. in East Chicago, Lake Co. They again had two boarders, Frank Borg and Carl Olson.6 They moved again by 1918, into their own house at 3832 Hemlock St. in East Chicago, and remained there until at least 1940. In 1920 a lodger named Henning Johnson was living with them, and in 1930 Nels's nephew Rudolph Gustafson was living with them.16,7,8,17
She was a charter member of Gennesarete Lutheran Church in East Chicago.10

He and his sister Jennie emigrated together from Sweden to the United States in 1902.3,4,5
Jennie's husband Carl Hanson later helped him get a job as a cement worker6, and he lived with them for a time, with a room in the basement.6 He was listed with them in the 1910 census at 5914 Chicago Ave. in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, as John Nelson, a boarder age 31 and born in Sweden.4 He left after an argument, and was supposedly never heard from again.2,6 However, a photograph of him at about age 25 or 30 has the studio name and location "Johnson, 1516 1/2 First Ave., Seattle" on the cardboard frame, indicating that he may have lived in Washington, at least for a time.7

In 1914 she traveled with her sister Jennie's family when they returned home to Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, after spending two years in Sweden. They left Gothenburg, Sweden, on 29 April on the ship Salmo, bound for Grimsby, England.4 From there they must have traveled overland to Liverpool, England, where they sailed on the SS Caronia on 2 May, arriving in New York on 11 May.5 She later returned to Sweden, where both she and her sister Emma worked for the mayor.3

He came to the United States in 18855,6,2 and became a naturalized citizen on 14 October 1892.7
In 1895, when their son August died, he and his wife Louisa were living at 109 String St. (now 1936 Des Plaines St.) in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, possibly with his brothers Charles and Herman, who both listed that as their address when they became naturalized citizens in 1894.8,9,10,11,12 By 1896 they had moved a block west, to the rear of a house at 133 (now 2028) Ruble St., where they lived until at least 1898.13,14 They apparently lived for a time at 43 (now 1910) W. Fullerton Ave. in Chicago, as August is listed there in the 1899 Chicago City Directory15,16, but by 1900 they had moved back to Ruble St., a little north of their previous location, to the rear of a multi-family house at 92 (now 1905) Ruble St.5,17,16
Sometime between 1901 and 1903, perhaps needing more room for their growing family, he and Louisa purchased a house about six miles west at 422 Alma Ave. (now 633 N. Latrobe Ave.) in Chicago18,6,12,19, where they lived the rest of their married lives. In 1910 they were renting part of their house to John Benson, his wife Matilda, and their two adult children, and in 1930 their son Frederick and his family were living with them, paying $25/month rent. Their house was then valued at $8000, one of the more expensive on the block.20,6,21,12,19

The identification of Louisa Hogrefe's parents is based primarily on census data. In the 1880 census there are just two children named Louisa Hogrefe (or some close variant of that name) of the right age living in the area of her birthplace of Du Page Co., Illinois. In Downers Grove in Du Page Co. there's a Henry Hografe with wife Amanda and children William, Henry, Louise (age 10), Sophia, and Jacob. And in Proviso in adjacent Cook Co. there's a William Hogreve with wife Dorothea and children Henry, Louise (age 8), and John. A published history of Du Page County includes a biographical sketch of Henry Hogrefe, living in Downers Grove, with the same children as listed in the 1880 census, and says that his daughter Louise married Fred Wehrmeister. Thus the Louise Hogrefe who married August Dobbeck is most likely the daughter of William.
In addition, in the William Hogreve household in the 1880 census, William's wife Dorothea is listed as being born in Prussia. The entries for the children Henry and Louise say their mother was born in Hanover, and the entry for John says his mother was born in Prussia. Thus, Henry and Louise must be from William's first marriage, to Louise Hartje, while John is from his second marriage, to Dorothea Janke.10,2,11
She was confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rodenberg (now Roselle), DuPage Co., Illinois, on 18 April 1886.5,6
In 1895, when their son August died, she and her husband August were living at 109 String St. (now 1936 Des Plaines St.) in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.12,13,14,15,16 By 1896 they had moved a block west, to the rear of a house at 133 (now 2028) Ruble St., where they lived until at least 1898.17,18 They apparently lived for a time at 43 (now 1910) W. At the time he registered for the draft on 12 September 1918, Arthur B. Dobbeck was living with his mother at 633 Latrobe in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.3 He and his wife Catherine lived at 828 Circle Ave. in Forest Park, Cook Co., Illinois, from at least 1930 to 1947.4,7 He was employed as a salesman for a paint company.4
Starting in the late 1930s he was was part of a group of four or five "fun loving gentlemen dubbed the 'Rover Boys'." Their families socialized together, and the men enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan, taking trips to places like St. Joseph, Hot Springs, and French Lick. On one trip from Chicago to St. Joseph, Michigan, on 24 August 1945, they ran out of fuel around 3:00 PM about four miles from their destination. They drifted on the lake for several hours, and after dark began sending SOS signals by flashlight to planes flying overhead. Around 11:30 the third plane to pass by saw their signal and notified the Coast Guard. A search was begun, and they were finally rescued around 3:00 AM, after drifting ten miles further off shore.6,8
During World War II, from 1941 to 1944, he was a member of the board in Forest Park charged with organizing and enforcing the rationing program, primarily for gasoline, fuel oil, and tires.9 He also served as commander of the Austin post of the American Legion and president of the Forest Park recreation board10, and on 23 October 1945 he was unanimously elected president of the Kiwanis Club in Forest Park.10
On 16 November 1946 he became suddenly ill, and was rushed to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Cook Co., Illinois. After appeals for blood donations, he underwent a "serious operation" on 24 December. He was back at home by 9 January 1947.7

He and his first wife Mary moved to Michigan in 1840, settling in Ionia Co.8 They moved to Brighton, Livingston Co., Michigan, in 18458, and on 1 April 1849 he bought 480 acres in Brighton Twp. from Charles Howard and his wife Margaret for $5,760. Half of this land was described as the "North East quarter & the East half of the North West quarter of Section thirty three (33) Town two (2) North Range Six (6) east." The other half was described as the "South West quarter of Section twenty eight & West half of the North West quarter of Section thirty three (33) both of said last mentioned tracts being in town two (2) North Range Six (6) East."9
He and his first wife "Jane" are listed in the census of 1850 in Brighton Twp., Livingston Co., Michigan, along with Howard (age 11), Emerson (9), Margaret (6), and Bronson (1). Also listed in the same household are Albert and Saml. Sowle (ages 23 and 12). He was a farmer, with real estate valued at $5000.6 They were again listed in Brighton Twp. in 1860. This time his wife is listed as "Mary Jane." Listed in the same household are John E. (age 8), Maggie E. (15), Bronson C. (10), Frank B. (5), and Jennie L. (1). Living with them was John Christian, a farm hand born in Germany. His occupation is again given as farmer, with real estate worth $6000, and personal estate worth $645.7
On 17 February 1869 Eli sold land described as village lots two, three, four, five, six, and seven on block number two of Gales Plat of Brighton, to Harriet Rodgers for $300. The property was also subject to a $700 mortgage dated 28 September 1864, held by Lucy S. Spencer, $300 of which was assumed by Harriet Rodgers.10
In 1870, he and his daughter Jennie were living in the household of William and Carrie Cushing, ages 31 and 23, in Brighton. Eli's occupation was listed as a butcher, with real estate worth $2000, and personal estate worth $200. The exact relationship between Eli Sowle and William Cushing isn't clear, except that they apparently lived in the same area. In the 1860 census for Livingston Co., there is a William B. Cushing, age 21, living in the household of Louise Cushing, age 40 (presumably his mother), ten households away from Eli's family.11,7
According to the 1873-74 Livingston County Directory, he lived in Brighton Village, at the intersection of Church and Grand River, on the northeast corner.12 In 1873 he and his brother John operated a meat market in Brighton, on Grand River between Fitch and North.12 He also served as street commissioner in Brighton.8
He and his second wife Mary are listed in the census of 1880 in Brighton. Both his parents are listed as being born in Rhode Island.13
He died intestate, and his widow Mary was appointed administratrix of his estate on 7 October 1887. At the time, the estimated value of his personal and real estate was $200 and $500, respectively.1
