Russell Otis Town was born on 14 March 1893 in Webberville, Ingham Co., Michigan.2,1,3,4 He married Florence Lane, daughter of Charles Eugene Lane and Blanche E. Miller, on 9 December 1917 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.5,6 He was killed in action during World War I, on 7 October 1918 in the Argonne Sector in France.6,4 He was initially buried on 10 October 1918 at the American B/A Cemetery in Chatel Chehery, France, then reburied at the Argonne American Cemetery (Section 104, Plot 3, Grave 153) in Romagne, France.7 His body was re-interred after the war at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.8,9
In 1900 he was living with his father and stepmother Otis O. and Dora Towne at Oxford House on Kearsley St. in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan.10 He moved with his parents to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, and was living with them at 1130 Michigan Ave. in 1908.11 In 1910, however, he was living with his sister Lucile and her husband Lee Cook in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan.12 But, he was soon back with his parents in South Bend, living at 1323 Michigan Ave. in 191213, and at 215 N. Main in 1916.14 A year later, when he registered for the World War I draft on 5 June 1917, he listed his residence as 979 Concord Ave. in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.3
Before he enlisted in the Army, he was assistant traffic manager with the Saxon Motor Car Co. in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.6,3
He enlisted for service as a private during World War I on 7 December 1917, and left for Columbus barracks in Ohio on 10 December 1917, the day after his marriage. In late December he was transferred to Camp Grant in Rockford, Illinois, and in March 1918 to Camp Hancock, Georgia, where he was assigned to the ordinance dept., Co. B, 110th Infantry. He sailed overseas with his unit on the City of Calcutta, leaving New York on 3 May 1918 and arriving in Liverpool, England, 13 days later. He first saw action on 4 July 1918.6,4,15
According to an account by 1st Sgt. William Roth, on 7 October 1918,

... we were resting on a hillside under shellfire. Town was lying between a Sergeant and myself when a runner came and wanted a runner to report to Battalion Headquarters and I told Town to go. He was waiting for a runner from another Company to come up when a piece of shrapnel hit him in the throat. I asked him whether he could talk or not, he only shook his head. We bandaged him up but he died on the way back. He didn't show any signs of suffering before he died.16

After the war his body was returned to the U.S. on the U.S. Transport ship Wheaton, sailing from Antwerp, Belgium, on 20 September 1921 and arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey, on 3 October. There were 2624 deceased personnel on the ship, 2036 of whom were Army infantry.9
