She lived with her father George and stepmother Honor (her mother's sister) in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut, where she was listed with them in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses.5,6,7 The Rust genealogy, published in 1891, says her stepmother was then "at home in Hartford, Ct., insane," and gives credit to Eliza for caring for her.3 In 1900, however, Eliza was listed in the census as an "inmate" at the Widow's Home in Hartford, and working as a nurse.8 In 1910 she was listed as a resident of the Hartford Almshouse, again as an "inmate."9

She was listed twice in the 1900 census. First, she was listed with her mother Margaret and stepfather Nathaniel Tryon and their children in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut. Listed with them was William Smith (age 75, born in Ireland). She was listed as age 19, but with a birth date of "Mar 1891" (perhaps intended to be Mar 1881), and was working as a bookkeeper for a grocery. Although Anna was Margaret's daughter from a previous relationship, and thus Nathaniel's stepdaughter, both she and William Smith were listed as boarders.2,1 She was also listed in 1900 as a lodger in the household of DeForest Sawyer in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. Here she's listed as age 20, born Mar 1880, again working as a bookkeeper for a grocery.11
In 1910 and 1920 she was listed in the census with her first husband Roland E. Burr in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.12,7 In 1930 and 1940 she was listed with her second husband Arthur C. James in Newington, Hartford Co., Connecticut. Her mother Margaret R. Tryon was living with them.5,6
