He lived in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, most, if not all, of his life. He and his first wife Eunice are listed there in the 1850 census, living with (his widowed mother) Mary Tryon. Living with them was Albert Warner, age 13.10 Nathaniel and Eunice are also listed in Glastonbury in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. Living with them in 1860 were Wyllard F. Tryon (age 13) and Ezekial Daniels (84).11; living with them in 1870 was Dwight Rockwell (9)12; and living with them in 1880 was William Welch (18, a boarder and farm worker).13
In 1900 he and his second wife Margaret were living in Glastonbury with their children Jane C., Nathaniel R., Joseph, and Charles H. Living with them were Anna I. Dixon (age 19, but listed with a birth date of March 1891) and William Smith (age 75, born December 1824), both born in Ireland. Anna was Margaret's daughter from a previous relationship, and thus Nathaniel's stepdaughter, but both she and William Smith were listed in the 1900 census as boarders.9,14
Nathaniel served as selectman in 1879 and 1880, as a Justice of the Peace, and as a grand juror.2
His stepdaughter Anna Dixon was administrator of his estate, which took several years to settle due to some quastionable stocks, and the fact that his daughter Jane contested the will.15
The Commemorative Biographical Record of Hartford County, Connecticut, says Nathaniel and Margaret had four children, then lists five - Jane, Cornelia, Nathaniel Russell, Joseph, and Charles Howard. The Tryon genealogy, apparently trying to make sense of that statement, lists their children as Jane, Cornelia, Nathaniel Russell, and Joseph Charles Howard. The 1900 census clarifies things, listing Jane C., Nathaniel R., Joseph, and Charles H.3,16,9

However, if the birth date of 8 August 1821 for his sister Lucinda is correct, Nathaniel could not have been born during that time period (unless he and Lucinda were twins).

She came to the United States in 1887, and became a naturalized citizen the following year.3,5,6 In 1900 she and her husband Nathaniel were living in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, with their children Jane C., Nathaniel R., Joseph, and Charles H. Living with them were Anna I. Dixon (age 19, but listed with a birth date of March 1891) and William Smith (age 75, born December 1824), both born in Ireland. Anna was Margaret's daughter from a previous relationship, and thus Nathaniel's stepdaughter, but both she and William Smith were listed in the 1900 census as boarders.3,7
In 1908 she and her daughter Jane traveled to Portadown, Ireland, to visit her sister Mary (Russell) Dickson.8
Margaret continued to live in Glastonbury after her husband's death, and is listed there in the 1910 census with her children, named as Jennie R., Russell N., Joseph, and Howard C., and her brother Samuel Russell, a widower age 60.9 She was again listed in Glastonbury in 1920. Living with her was her son Charles and his wife Dorothy, and listed next to them was the family of Nathaniel R. Tryon (her son).5
By 1930 she had moved to Newington, Hartford Co., Connecticut, where she was listed in the census with her daughter Anna, and Anna's second husband Arthur C. James. Also living with them were Arthur's son Wendell A. James (age 23), and Anna's son Sherwood Burr (19).6 She was also listed there with Anna and Arthur in the 1940 census.10
He bought a small lot from Isaac Hubbard in April 1731.2 On 26 March 1734 he bought 72 acres of land in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, from his mother-in-law Dorothy Treat for £30.6 On 6 August 1739 he bought two acres of land in Glastonbury, including a house, from Joseph Dickinson for £40.7 On 10 June 1757 he and his wife Sarah gave about five acres of land in Glastonbury "for ... natural love and affection" to their son Joseph.8
He was a furniture maker, and also worked as a joiner, once "on an ancient Talcott house."9,2
It should be noted that the information in the Tryon genealogy on the family of Joseph and Sarah (Treat) Tryon contains several errors. In particular it lists nine children for them, with only three having birth dates. They are listed in the following order, which is inconsistent with their birth dates: Sarah (called the first daughter, born 13 July 1730), Ephraim (first son), Russell (second son), George (third son), Nathaniel (fourth son, born 1765?, died 15 December 1835), Anna (second daughter), Mary (third daughter, born about 1738, died 1815), Honor (fourth daughter), Joseph (fifth son). Recent and extensive research by Lynn McManus has clarified the details for this family, and shows that some of these children were actually children of Joseph and Sarah's son Joseph.10,11

This was actually Sarah (Gibbs) Tryon, wife of a different Joseph Tryon, who is also listed in the Tryon genealogy as dying on that date.9,8

On 14 November 1801 he bought 50 acres of the family farm in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, along with a 1/4 share of the house and barn, and water rights, from his father Joseph for $500.3
His will was dated 1 October 1834. He left all of his property to his nephew George Tryon, who was named executor. The identification of his parents as Joseph Tryon and Abigail Benton is based on this will, in which he names Nathaniel Tryon, with whom he lived, as his brother.4

He actually had two nephews named George Tryon, one the son of his brother George, and the other the son of his brother Nathaniel. However, his brother George had moved to Vermont in 1803, where his son George was born in 1805. It's thus clear that the nephew George named in the will was Nathaniel's son, who was likely living with Ephraim and Nathaniel on the family farm.

The identification of George Tryon's parents as Joseph Tryon and Abigail Benton is based on a statement by Nathaniel Tryon in Josiah Brook's Revolutionary War pension application, saying "My brother George Tryon went and I went to assist him on the road."1
He bought land in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, from Josiah Hale in 17875, and 160 acres from his father Joseph for $500 on 8 April 1800.6 On 11 April 1803 he sold his farm and an oil mill in Glastonbury to his sister Polly's husband Jonathan Strickland for £1000.7,5
He and his wife Flora then moved to Berlin, Orange Co. (now Washington Co.), Vermont,5 where they had purchased a farm on the Dog River from Enoch Smith.8 He resumed his oil mill business about 1805 when he bought a 1/3 interest in Johnson's Mill in Berlin.8
Family lore says that he ran into financial trouble when his brother-in-law Jonathan Strickland failed to keep up with the payments on the land he had bought from George in 1803. To meet the expenses involved in running his own farm and oil mill in Vermont, and to make payments to his father and brother in Glastonbury for the land he bought from them in 1800, he borrowed money from his brother-in-law David Nye. He still owed on the loan when he died unexpectedly in 1809. Nye allowed George's family to remain on the farm until he was able to sell it.9
An administrator's bond was posted for his estate on 3 May 1810, with Flora Tryon and James Tryon named as principles, and David Nye as surety. The inventory of his estate was presented in court on 7 July 1810, with a total value of $2093.63, including his 100-acre farm with house, barn, sheds, etc., worth $1600, which was "deeded to David Nye Esq. asurity for the payment of several large debts." The commissioner's report, presented on 13 November 1810, showed $103.97 owed to the estate, and $715.37 in debts (including $355.67 owed to James Tryon). On 2 May 1811 the court found that his personal estate was insufficient to pay the debts, and the administrators were ordered to sell the real estate at public vendue (i.e., auction). The administrator's account, dated 12 December 1811, showed expenses totaling $503.59, including a dower of $150 paid to his widow Flora.10,11,12,13,14

Her parents are given as "George and Prudence Tryon," likely a transcription error, possibly absent-mindedly using the child's name for the mother's. No other records for this church have the names "George and Prudence Tryon," and her baptism date fits nicely with the other children of George and Flora Tryon.

She and her husband David moved to Berlin, Orange Co. (now Washington Co.), Vermont, in 1790.11
The Nye genealogy says David and Honor had six children - David, Prudence, and Polly, and three others who died young. However, records have been found for just five, with Honor, David, and Prudence living to maturity. No record has been found for a daughter Polly.12

The 12 October 1782 date is likely incorrect, since Eastbury church records also list "David Nye and wife Onnor" as renewing their Covenant and being admitted to Communion on 9 June 1782.

On 10 June 1757 he received about five acres of land in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, from his parents "for ... natural love and affection."8 On 6 April 1758 he and his wife Abigail, along with Timothy Easton and his wife Hannah, and Jonathan Hollister and his wife Ruth, sold three acres of land in Glastonbury to Adam Bell for £3 15s.9,5 On 14 July 1760 he and Jonathan Treat purchased 169 acres in Eastbury Parish in Glastonbury from Richard Smith for £346 9s.10 Shortly afterwards, in September 1760, he sold a house in Glastonbury to Timothy Easton.9 He and Jonathan Treat divided their land in April 1764, with Joseph receiving the northwest portion where he established the family farm.11,12
In August 1777 he was drafted to serve in Col. Thaddeus Cook's Regiment to go to Stillwater. At the time he was married with at least four young children, and Josiah Brooks, who was unmarried, was "solicited and induced" to take his place, serving from August to late October 1777.13
On 8 April 1800 he sold 160 acres in Glastonbury to his son George for $500.14 On 14 November 1801 he sold 50 acres of the family farm in Glastonbury along with a 1/4 share of the house and barn, and water rights, to his son Ephraim for $500.15
He and his son Nathaniel ran the family farm together in Glastonbury.16 They were involved in at least two (related?) land disputes that ended up in court. In November 1806 "Tryon et al." were sued by "Wells et al." The Wellses claimed that they had been dispossessed of their land by the Tryons, and produced a copy of a certificate of a survey as evidence of their right to the land. The court ruled that there was uncertainty about who made and recorded the survey, and about what body certified the copy, and therefore it was inadmissible.17 Land records show that the Wells family later demanded compensation for the land, threatening the Tryons with imprisonment if they failed to make the payments. Although the local sheriff made several visits to the Tryon farm, no payments were made, and the Tryons were never jailed.16
The second case involved a land sale from Josiah Brooks to Nathaniel Tryon on 2 December 1803, which was recorded soon afterward. About six months later, on 30 May 1804, Tryon sold the land to a man named Riley, and the sale was recorded the same day. In the meantime, "Rathbone et al." had sued Brooks, and in the process had attached the land on 21 January 1804 (after the sale to Nathaniel Tryon) as Brooks's property, and a copy of the attachment was left in the town clerk's office. The Rathbones won their suit, and on 18 May 1804 the land was appraised and set off to them. The execution was recorded 23 May 1804 by the town clerk, and 2 June 1804 by the City Court clerk. The Rathbones then sued Riley for the land in February 1807. Riley stated he was a legitimate buyer, knowing nothing of any fraud or the plaintiff's attachment of the land, and that his title was therefore valid. The Rathbones argued that the copy of the attachment left with the town clerk was "constructive notice" to the defendant of their claim. The judge's summation to the jury said that if they found the sale from Brooks to Tryon was fraudulent, then the copy of the attachment left with the town clerk was indeed "constructive notice," and that the plaintiffs had legal title to the property. The jury found for the Rathbones.18
While it's not clear from the description of these cases in Reports of Cases Argued ... how the outcome affected the Tryons, they eventually did lose part of their land, but managed to save the original farm, which remained in the family until about 1902.17,18,16
