Nathaniel Tryon was born about 1765 (based on his age at death of 70) at John Tom Hill near Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut.2,3 He married first Sarah Wood on 10 July 1801 at the First Congregational Church in Manchester, Hartford Co., Connecticut.4 He was married second, by William Lockwood, to Mary Strickland, daughter of Simeon Strickland and Mary Fox, on 26 December 1804 at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut.5,6 He died on 15 December 1835 in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut.2,3 He was buried at John Tom Hill Cemetery in Hartford Co., Connecticut.2
The Tryon genealogy by Wesley Tryon erroneously lists this Nathaniel Tryon as the son of Joseph Tryon and Sarah Treat.3 The proof that he was actually the son of Joseph and Sarah's son Joseph comes from the Revolutionary War pension application of Josiah Brooks. In it Brooks states that he served as a substitute for Nath. Tryon's father Joseph Tryon, both of Glastonbury, from about August 1777 to late October 1777. In an affidavit dated 3 August 1832, Nathaniel Tryon "aged sixty eight years" confirmed that Josiah Brooks "did vollingteer and went to the northand three months for my father."7 Since Joseph Tryon, husband of Sarah Treat, died in 1771, Nathaniel's father must have been Joseph and Sarah's son Joseph.8
He and his father Joseph ran the family farm together in Glastonbury.9 He also owned land in Tolland Co., Connecticut, both in Hebron, and in Bolton that he had inherited from his first wife Sarah after her death in 1804.9
He and his father were involved in at least two (related?) land disputes that ended up in court. In November 1806 "Tryon et al." were sued by "Wells et al." The Wellses claimed that they had been dispossessed of their land by the Tryons, and produced a copy of a certificate of a survey as evidence of their right to the land. The court ruled that there was uncertainty about who made and recorded the survey, and about what body certified the copy, and therefore it was inadmissible.10 Land records show that the Wells family later demanded compensation for the land, threatening the Tryons with imprisonment if they failed to make the payments. Although the local sheriff made several visits to the Tryon farm, no payments were made, and the Tryons were never jailed.9
The second case involved a land sale from Josiah Brooks to Nathaniel Tryon on 2 December 1803, which was recorded soon afterward. About six months later, on 30 May 1804, Tryon sold the land to a man named Riley, and the sale was recorded the same day. In the meantime, "Rathbone et al." had sued Brooks, and in the process had attached the land on 21 January 1804 (after the sale to Nathaniel Tryon) as Brooks's property, and a copy of the attachment was left in the town clerk's office. The Rathbones won their suit, and on 18 May 1804 the land was appraised and set off to them. The execution was recorded 23 May 1804 by the town clerk, and 2 June 1804 by the City Court clerk. The Rathbones then sued Riley for the land in February 1807. Riley stated he was a legitimate buyer, knowing nothing of any fraud or the plaintiff's attachment of the land, and that his title was therefore valid. The Rathbones argued that the copy of the attachment left with the town clerk was "constructive notice" to the defendant of their claim. The judge's summation to the jury said that if they found the sale from Brooks to Tryon was fraudulent, then the copy of the attachment left with the town clerk was indeed "constructive notice," and that the plaintiffs had legal title to the property. The jury found for the Rathbones.11
While it's not clear from the description of these cases in Reports of Cases Argued ... how the outcome affected the Tryons, they eventually did lose part of their land, but managed to save the original farm, which remained in the family until about 1902.10,11,9
The Tryon genealogy states that "it is said" Nathaniel Tryon and Mary Strickland had eight children, but that names are known for only seven. However, the author was apparently unaware of Nathaniel's first marriage to Sarah Wood. Some later researchers have suggested the additional child may instead have been with Nathaniel's first wife Sarah, and perhaps died young.3,12
Published genealogies, including the Tryon genealogy, also list Nathaniel's first child Harvey as the son of Mary Strickland. However, no birth record has been found for Harvey, and the only evidence we have for his birth date is his age reported in the 1850 census (45), 1860 census (54), and the 1870 census mortality schedule (65). If the dates we have for Sarah Wood's death (4 December 1804), and for Nathaniel's marriage to Mary Strickland (26 December 1804), are correct, the 1850 census and the 1870 mortality schedule both imply that Harvey was the son of Nathaniel's first wife Sarah Wood, while the 1860 census implies he was the son of his second wife Mary Strickland.3,13,14,15,16
